Ford 601 workmaster dying

Hi, Late last year my tractor started randomly dying while bushhogging. After cleaning the the oil in the air filter and the fuel sediment bulb I decided it must be the carburetor. Had some issues with it anyway so this year I bought and put on a new carburetor. I think I have it adjusted properly pretty close anyway. The problem is after 5-10 minutes of running it will just dye. I even started it in the barn and let it run with no load and it died within 10 minutes. What can be causing this? What is the next thing on it I should check? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Make sure the vent on the gas cap is not plugged or that you have the wrong cap. Make sure you have a good flow of gas. When it dies, check
for spark. It might be an ignition switchor coil issue if there is no spark when it dies. Let us know what you find.

Common causes are a bad ignition switch which gets hotter and fails over 10-15 min , or a coil doing the same.

Jumper your ignition switch or just run a wire to your coil and see if life gets better.

Always check spark at stall, if it has spark, go fuel, if no spark, investigate wires and connections and switches

Trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around. Check your spark when it dies. You need a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap at all the plug. Next check fuel flow by pulling the carb drain plug. Make sure you have a good flow of gas for a few minutes. Catch the gas to make sure you do not have water/dirt/rust in it the n post back what you find

While it is possible for spark to go away while running, Your description sounds just like fuel obstruction. The gas is probably running, but not fast enough to allow the motor to keep running. You may test it by preparing a container to catch the gas, then remove the plug in the bottom of the carb and see that the gas will continue to run in a stream for twenty seconds. If not there are likely three different places that can be plugged.

Thanks for all the responses. I think the fuel has been flowing fine but I will have to check it after it dies and see if it will flow. How exactly will I check the spark? I am by no means a mechanic, I just have a very small budget for tractor repair ha.

Had an issue like this with a riding mower. Durn thing would run rough after a while. then i noticed when i took off gas cap to check gas level, engine would start fine. after a few minutes, rough running. took off cap, ran fine. i would have never thought that the vent failure would lead to gas starvation but learned something new.
