The head on my Ford 850 cracked this winter. The tractor is in Al. I'm 400 miles away. Trying to figure out if it would be about the same cost to take it to a New Holland dealer and have them do the work or trailer it home have it fixed by a guy I know here then trailer it back? Was thinking maybe some of you guys that work for or at dealers may have an idea of the cost of the repair.

Did it crack from freeze damage?

If so, be advised, there could well be other damage as yet undiscovered.

agreed. tell us more about the damage. if it freeze cracked, you need to check the block.

otherwise, head swapping isn't a huge deal.. you could do it in the field with tools and a day to kill.

Yes it cracked this past winter fro the cold, I can get it to run but not very good, not able to drive it just keep it at idle or a little above then it will die-out after a few minutes.

Do a simple thing and call the dealer and ask what shop time cost and how long the book says it will take to do a head on one. Most good shops will give you a estimate if you ask for one but as the others have said you could also have a cracked block or even more problems

Called one there in Al. they get $80/hr labor. He said $640 just in labor, plus parts. Guess I'll be hauling it home this weekend. Thanks gents.

Shoot that is a cheap repair place. Where I live the dealers get around $105 and hour plus parts.
