I have a 3930 ford that I just bought. Only
2000 hours and we'll taken care of. Hooked
it to a bush hog Monday night and engaged
the pto and quickly disengaged taking the
lift with it. Have read that shafts are bad
about breaking. please take me through some
steps of trouble shooting this please.
Thanks

Breaking a PTO shaft shouldn't affect the lift. The only thing that the PTO and the 3 point lift have in common and the only thing that would affect both is hydraulic pressure or lack thereof.

Have you checked to make sure that the fluid level in the rear end is up where it should be?

Check the hydraulic filter under the left footrest, if it gets bent or the wrong size filter it can pull air instead of oil.

Thanks guys for the replys.I definitely need
the help.I am going to buy filters tomorrow
(both spin on) and yes fluid level is right
in the safe mark. It's a cab 3930 and has
the 8x8 sync trans. My understanding is that
the input drives both But not for certain. I
have been picking local tractor guys brains
to with no certain answer yet.
If I change filters, double check level.
What next? Pull lower pump and check it out.
can I tell buy the gear that turns the pump
if that shaft is broken or if the pump is
bad?

Buy a service manual and the proper pressure gauges and fittings. Check pressures. Don't just jump in and start tearing stuff apart. Or hire a tractor mechanic.Tractor hydraulic problems are not always simple and require a methodical approach.

I agree with you 100%. I have downloaded the original cnh service manual and reviewing it now. it's pretty in depth but once I read it a few times I might understand it better.
And mechanic is last resort. Usally I can research stuff like this enough that eventually I find someone who has had the same problem and can fix it myself and save 2k. Any insight on the drive of this pump would be great.
Thanks again guys

It's true that the PTO input shafts are bad to break through the transmission or strip their splines at the pressure plate. That said it's also possible to have a pump or pump inlet/filter problem. First step would be a filter change of the hydraulic filter under the left footboard and observe that and the housing for any signs of physical damage that might indicate it's drawing air. If nothing is observed and no difference is noticed after the filter change... I would probably pull the lift cover since that's not really a big job on an open station 30 series. Then you can drain the hydraulic oil level down ~some~ and start the tractor up and see what's turning and what's not turning. Be aware that you should use a section of garden hose or something of similar size to redirect the pump flow from the tube that feeds the lift cover... unless you want that in the face. From that point you can determine if the shafts are turning the pump or if there's a problem with the pump... If the shafts are not turning the next step is a forward split to determine what's going on in there. That's not a small operation on a 30 series. Expect to remove the fuel tank and steering pedestal to get access. You can probably do it without removing that.... but it's easier to remove it.

First Question-Does it have 1 pump or two. The main pump that supplies the oil to the hydraulics and the IPTO is under the right running board. It is 2 pumps in one that supplies 2 different pressures. It is a gear pump driven by a gear.As far as the CNH manual being too in depth.Be glad that it is. Tractor hydraulics can get complicated.

It does have two pumps. One under the left of the cab and the other is on the right side of the engine block. And yes it's just taking me a while to read and understand. After this all happened Monday night I just parked it and checked on it the next day. When I checked the hyd. Fluid it was low and it took 8 gallons to get the fluid level back up to the safe mark. Is there a way when I engaged the pto it drew enough fluid down enough to suck air and now the system is air locked?

Your guess is as good as mine. It holds 12gal so I'm still optimistic that is ok. I have only used the 3ph on it and had it a month. This is the first time trying the pto.
I'll update tonight on what I find.

Those pumps are more resilient than you might think. I've got one here that's been run low like that more times than can be counted and it's still going at 5k hours. It's not what it should be but it works well enough. To be honest... 4 gal in it would be good. This one has been run until it wouldn't lift... many times.

You must have a lot better luck than my customers. I have changed out at least 5 in the last year alone. Bushings worn out and the gears eat up the housing.Water seems to be the big culprit around here.

It appears that Rod missed that it has a cab in the post about removing the lift cover. You can remove it however by raising the back of the cab. It will come up about six inches which will enable you to slip an engine lift in over it, raise it a couple inches then slide it out.
