1960 801 Select O Speed in Exc Condition = $?

There's a 1960 Ford 801 for sale down the street from me and I think the price is crazy high but wanted some opinions on what to look for and offer. Trying to find a good working tractor, with a loader, under $7500 in NH right now is hard to come by and I like the "antique" part of this one as I can wrench with anyone but otherwise know nothing about these tractors. Some have said stay away from the Selectospeed transmission. Any thoughts on value or what to check when I inspect is appreciated. I included a few lousy pics of pictures so you can see the condition.

The dealer is asking $6,900. I told him that's the highest price in the US for a 55 year old tractor. I was going to offer him $5900 but then I see them going online for $3500-4500 but not in this condition...although 3900 hours seems high.

For a SOS the tractor it self is tops worth maybe $2500-3000. Loader maybe another $1000 or so and brush hog $200-300. So yes maybe $4000 or so. I got a 801/841 with loader and 2 bottom plow with a Sherman combo back in the early 80s for $3250 and that 4 speed wit h3 speed aux is a better tractor then one with an SOS in my book

In Southern Illinois, with paint like that, a loader and a 6ft+ brush hog, weights, all in good working condition, with power steering, and if it ran good with no smoke, you are looking at a minimum of $5000-6000 especially from a dealer.

Make sure you take it through all 10 gears and make sure they all pull. And the creeper should slow you down if you press it half way down, its not really a clutch, but if you push it all the way down it will stop you.

Make sure your pto works good, make him throw in an ORC for it if it doesn't have one already.

I would make him put some good heavy 8ply 3 rib tires on the front though, not fond of those tread tires on a tractor.

I love my SOS, especially when the loader is on it, its kind of like talking to lawnmower guys about hydro trans mowers, some loved em, some still hate them... to each his own though.

Having both Independent Power to the lift, and Independent Power to the PTO is nice, and the loader should run off of a front pump, the fluid is held in the frame of the loader, might crack the drain in the center tube of the frame up in front under the pump to make sure they changed the loader oil as well.

The only thing I don't like about it is the ag adjustable front axle, my 4000 has the heavy fixed front axle, just a little heavier is all, but they made those tractors for 9 years like that, so I doubt you would have much trouble with it.

Remember its a dealer, he got it on a trade in, so he should be flexible with his price.

I have seen the 63/64 4000's with loaders sell for similar prices to what he's asking, and its very close to the same tractor.

From what I can tell it looks like a nice heavy brush hog as well.

I would love to buy 10 6 foot bush hogs in good shape for $200 to $300 each and the power steering is plus a grand over a non power steering one. I do not care for the SOS but live pto is a big plus

Thank you for taking the time for a reply and helping me with a guide to it's value. I went today and tried to make a deal. There's a bit of a diesel leak (drip) on the back side of the injector pump where the throttle lever is and a bit of oil seepage (small) that's coming from the valve cover gasket. Other than that, it started fine, runs strong, no smoke and running it through a field and into a parking lot, all the gears in the SOS worked fine, seems like no issue there other than getting used to how it shifts. The loader is in very good condition. PTO and 3pt hitch worked well, new radiator, new coolant and hydraulic hoses, fan, crankshaft seal, paint, all fluids, filters etc have been done.

They wanted $6900, I offered $5500, they laughed, I went to $5800 and they went to $6200 and that's when I left and said call me if you change your mind...he said he wouldn't. There's a lot of iron there for $6.2k but it's still [b:5b4151fd97]55 years old[/b:5b4151fd97]. It was a barn find they picked up last winter and brought back to life so I have no history, service records, manuals, nothing. I've seen these out there for $3500-4500, but needing some work. I just can't bring myself to pay $6200 for something this old that's been sitting for years and could blow up the day after I get it home. Dealer said it would never happen, engine is bullet proof. I don't know, struggling with it, such a cool tractor all shined up.

At, $200 - $300 I'd take half a dozen decent 6' rotary cutters.

I like the S-O-S but not the early 4 cylinder diesel engine.

Agree about the PS.

I like the S-O-S but not the early 4 cylinder diesel engine. In my are, the S-O-S probably reduces the value by $1,000 - $1,500. PS probably adds $750+. Rear weights $750+.

Cant see enough of the mower to help much but it should be worth $750 - $1000.

Is the loader powered by a crankshaft driven front pump or the tractor pump. It will be quite slow if driven from the tractor pump.

Rear tires look decent but not new.

I doubt if I would have offered what you did and would not even consider his asking price.

You should be able to get a decent MF 231 with loader for $7500.

Dean, I may learn to like em , I have bought 2 in hopes of getting one good one. As soon as I get the time I intend to pull the known bad SOS down before I try the one that is said to be good, however it is behind a diesel that does not run. The bad one is on a 871 that has a good gas engine.
So with the help from this sight, I hope to end up with a good 871.

I would agree with this.

If you want to come to Virginia, I could set you up with a 1960 641 gasser with a loader, factory power steering, HD front end, running, for $2500. Loader is a Ford unit with power up/down and bucket curl (not a cheap trip bucket). Front mount pump, and even has a filter in the system. It's all original and doesn't appear to have been apart. Only one coat of paint on it.....the original, but it's seen its better days.

45lbs of oil pressure hot or cold, and starts extremely easily, even on the original 6V system. It does smoke some, but the more I run it, the less and less it is getting. Hydraulics good. Only down side is that the power steering needs some work still. I rebuilt the pump, but think the steering box needs rebuilt also. Steering cylinders look good, though.....I wouldn't touch them.

Here's a picture. I could get a bunch more, and even some video if you were seriously interested. I'm planning on getting it on craigslist this week, FYI.

By the way, the pie weights do not go with it. They are staying for my machine. And that $2500 cash is my absolute bottom "get it out of here" price. :)

Thanks,
Kevin

nice tractor
be an expensive one here in 'expensive Ford land' too.
I would have stopped and looked too.
ok, after the look....
$4500...a tractor is worth what it is worth. That's what that
model equipped like it is....is worth.
Walk in and ask about it....they say $6900..
too far apart, I go home without making an offer.

couple of thoughts...
with paint on the tires, all their other work on it is suspect.
attention to detail thing.

Your money limit would put you on a Ford 3000-4000-5000 or
other brand equivalent easily.
