641 remote hyd control

Greetings one an and all. Just picked up a 641 and the remote hydraulic control does not seem to engage properly. Nothing hooked up and the caps are still on the lines. With the engine running and trying to move the handle produces a kick back bumping feeling in the handle. Any ideas? Just trying to get it cleaned up a bit, change some fluids and find a brush hog to hook up to the rear of it for now. No great need for the remote hydraulics but just curious.
Thank you for your time.

I am not hydraulically smart, but I think what you describe will happen if nothing is hooked up to the lines. I could be wrong, but it sounds more like normal to me. Why don't you try and hook up a hydraulic implement to the remotes and see what happens? That's what I would do. I am sure those who aren't so hydraulically challenged like me will pipe up soon. Good luck. Steve

That's an open center system, which means that the fluid has to have a path back to the sump or you will dead head the pump when you open the valve. I think that the bumping feeling in the handle is the pressure hitting maximum. It's not good for the pump or the lines to do that a lot.

You are dead heading the pump against the relief valve as there is no place for the oil to go with the valve ports plugged. Not a good practice.

Hello once again. Thank you for all the replies. Dead heading sounds like what might be going on. I bought this machine after the wife told me I could not get pie weights. So I need to clean it up and service this one then sell it off sometime soon.
Think then I can get pie weights? Probably not. Then again...

Just the desire for knowledge that the next soon to be owner does not encounter any problems. Would you desire to own a 650 hour 641? Rebuilt with deep tax payer pockets. Then after being rebuilt was sold off. It will be sold off with a 5 foot brush hog and a few repairs and maintenance done to it.

I think you may not have understood my question.

With apparently no knowledge of what would or would not be correct operation, you apparently arbitrarily decided it may not be operating correctly? That's puzzling... kind of like waking up in a foreign environment, dark room, totally devoid of any visual reference of where you might be, and yet, deciding the direction you are facing is 'not' a certain direction.... the logic is just puzzling to me. Is, no frame of reference todraw conclusions.
