I'd rather not pull the cover.
In the past i have had to jiggle/wiggle the hi/lo gear lever on occasion to start the tractor but now that isn't working.

I assume it is broken or stuck since I can bypass it with a jumper wire and start the tractor.
I am using the jumper on the 2 wire connector located about 10 inches after it exits the trans cover.

Good chance the switch it self has gone bad and before you doing hat you did just made it work a bit longer. You could wire around it but then you will not have a safety device.

Well, after telling y'all the only way to start was to jump that connection, I just went back out and it started? Maybe it's not the switch?

May also be a poor connection some place and if it has a plug in type of thing maybe the connector there need cleaned up

yeah, I think i'll ohm/continuity check the trans exit wire while going from hi-lo neutral repeatedly , that should tell me something about the switch.

Just pinch the two wires together that come down from under the dash.
Bypasses the neutral safety switch.
No one else will know how to start it but you will.

Hey Dog,
I like that, but how do I pinch them?

BTW: I am an idiot risk taker and even I would never disable the neutral safety switch.

remember power from the key, thru the NS, to the solenoid. so if you have bad connections anywhere, it will cause problems.

I have a '77 ford 3600 and the neutral safety switch failed. I wasn't prepared to put in the effort to replace it at the time so I cut the wires to the switch and put a wire nut on them to close the circuit, BUT I pull those wires out of the connection when I'm off the tractor as a safety/key. I've tried to start the tractor several times forgetting to insert the wire back into the connection but it's better than having a possible terrible accident for a short term soulution.

In my humble opinion, it is worth the cost of replacing that switch! Better to do it now, before someone gets hurt!
Just my $0.02 worth! (Canadian) LOL!

and if you have the style starter/solenoid with that one
silly little blade connector, make sure it is secure and
the connection is good.....

If your neutral safety switch fails completely, change the trans oil and see if you can find the tough little ball bearing that is
probably down in there now.

UPDATE: same thing, started fine , after 1 1/2 hours wouldn't start back and had to jump.
u think it could be temp related?
I tried to wiggle the spade connector on the starter/solenoid where the wire ends, no help
