4 speed trans and SOS rear compatibility

A buddy of mine broke the axle in his 641 loader. He has the 4 speed, I have an 871 rear I can get him. Will the SOS rear bolt up to the 4 speed. Case #'s are the same as my 841.The 641 # is after the input spline change

I would think so, as long as the splines match like you say they should! But I ain't no expert on cobbling tractors together.

The guy has a place up state NY and he is putting in a driveway/road with his 641. I believe he has HD weights on it
and I know he has a backhoe attachment for it that he hasn't yet installed. He pulled the axle out of the trumpet and
said it was twisted before it snapped so there may be more damage once he opens it up. He's only up there on the
weekends and is looking for an EZ fix. I suggested he go with the 801 rear. It's heavier duty for his loader/backhoe
needs. I got the SOS up by the barn and will start the disassembly today. I have an early 4000 that has a 4 speed and
is apart so I will check the splines before he comes to get it next week. I'll let you know if it matches up.
Although mostly used for moving logs it's nice to have the forklift for moving dead tractor around.

Split the trans off today inbetween the snowflakes and check the spline with the one off my 4sp. slid right on no
problem. I'll pull the pto tomorrow and it should be ready to go.

o hard facts for you, but some things to think about that I "may" remember. Splines on coupler may be different & the PTO was very different between the two transmission types.

I tried the trans coupler with one from my 4sp and it fit fine. I know the pto is wrong He'll have to replace it with
the one from the 641.
Thanks, Kirk

And these SOS tranny's are considerably heavier than the standard 4sp. This was the easiest way to handle it.

Yea with a set of those babies I could really load it up Probably get my 2300 lb counter weight of the ground, brake steering.

Alexander's in E. Texas is/was primarily a ford restoration supplier. One of their products was a crate mounted tranny rework kit for tractors with an SOS. So, if they had that for $1750 back then, they must hook up. I didn't look at the contents real close. All I saw in a glance was a tranny, housing and all the internal parts mounted and strapped to a pallet ready for installation. I had my 4000 SOS split years ago and the clutch disc and PP were, looked to be the same as you have with a manual tranny. It is just used as a power coupler on the SOS and never disengages.

Don't know if they still do it or not. Probably have a www.
