Valvetrain Knocking Noise

Hello, Just had the head off my '59 841, got it remachined, new valves etc. Put it all back together. started up and at first I thought it sounded great (four cylinders firing is WAY better than just three!!) Then realized there was a knocking sound coming from the engine. Put a little wood 1x1 stick to my ear and on valvetrain and seemed like it was coming from there, but shut it off pretty quick cause didn't sound good. Any suggestions before I take off gas tank and valvetrain cover and start looking around?

Also, had been blowing LOTS of oil (?and smoke?) out of the breather/filler for crankcase oil. Is there supposed to be a tube or hose on that to direct it down? Was a ton of oil, dirt etc, on tractor and would like to keep it a little cleaner now.
Thanks!

A broken ring will make a light knock or clatter.
I had one tractor with broken rings and another that the ring groove was about 25 thou. too wide.
It clattered quite a bit but didn't smoke out of the breather.
The one with broken rings not only clattered but smoked quite a bit out of the breather.

It's a 4600.
I'm pretty sure by then they all had the pads for the raduis rods.
Why make two different castings for the same transmission?
