I think the guy I bought my 4000 from screwed up the battery wiring. Is there a way to tell if it should be a positive ground or negative ground. The guy had the positive running to
the selenoid adn then from that to the starter. the neg to the a bolt on the frame. There was very heavy corrosion on the positive side. In addition I put a brand new battery in and
within a day it was dead. No key in the ignition and all lights were off. Have no clue whats up with that. Any ideas.

4 cylinder (early 4000) or 3 cylinder (late 4000)? The priors w/gasoline engines were positive ground. I don't believe the later ones were, but not that familiar with those.

well is it a late model 4000 or a 63-64 4000 is it gas or diesel? It does make a difference the 63-64 gas was 6 volt pos ground. The diesel 63-64 diesel was 12 volt neg ground ans the 4000 65 and up is 12 volt neg ground

IF its a 12v conversion on a 4cyl gas tractor its more than likely a negative ground now as well.

Look up one of JMOR's wiring diagrams and make sure everything is routed correctly, don't bypass anything on it, the key switch is meant to isolate the battery completely from even the alternator. If something is bypassed it can cause a drain on the battery.

Also if the solenoid is the wrong one it can short to ground through the base and cause bad things to happen.

Corrosion could come from bad battery cables as well, might want to look at replacing them.

Need to find the cause of the corrosion though, before you just start replacing parts or it can get expensive to find out it was just a bad connection or cable.

3 cyl were all 12v neg ground.

now.. does it still have a lucas generator on it or has it been swapped to an alternator.

with nothing on you say bat discharges? put a test lamp inline with hot cable to battery.. lamp should light up if discharging.

if so.. start pulling electrical conenctions at things like the armature of the genny.. or charge ware of an alternator and see if it stops.

Given it's a 3-Cyl (I don't know if the 4 Cyl have this issue or not) check the WHOLE positive cable VERY carefully, or just replace it, or better yet replace it and put the replacement in a hose (or put the current one in a hose if it's OK.)

The fuel tank seam that wears the positive cable insulation as it's routed and makes a little plasma arc torch (key can be off, still works) onto the fuel tank was either brilliance in planned obsolescence, or a very bad design choice. A number of tractors and the buildings they were in have burned from this one.
