861 diesel lift problems

First... I have read thru all of the archives and found a lot of great info for testing and fixing the lift, but I don't think I saw anyone post with an issue like mine. So before I try and use all of that great info and start pulling things apart I figured I'd ask the opinion those who know more than me.
My lift generally works and I have had it apart several times in the past to fix pin's make adjustments etc thinking that was the reason for my problems, all to no avail. I have never however had any of the valves out and checked.
My problems are 2 fold.
Sometimes if I raise a heavy implement it won't lower it. I can work the controls up and down and it will ultimately release and lower, sometimes with a jolt.
Sometimes it won't raise a heavy implement. Like when I am plowing I come to the end of the row and raise the plow out of the ground and look back to check and sometimes it won't raise the plow until I jiggle the controls up and down.
I do have a remote hydraulic control on it but the problems existed even before I added that.
The entire hydraulic system was cleaned and filled with fresh fluid when I got the tractor about 4 years ago. The tractor is stored inside.
If my memory serves me correct I tried switching from position to draft mode and that SOMETIMES seemed to fix it. I also believed I tried jiggling the remote in and out and that SOMETIMES fixed it as well.
My thought was the unloader valve but I am looking for direction from those who definitely know more than I do on this issue.
Thanks in advance...
Alan

our post reads as if all this occurs when engine is running. Does it ever fail to lower when a load was raised, then engine turned off and then attempt to lower? AND if it fails to lower under these conditions, will any amount of 'jiggling' make it lower?

To the best of my recollection if it happened and I shut her down it would still be stuck and jiggling the control up and down would free it.

hile I cannot say with absolute certainty, I think that takes most suspicion off of the unloader valve. So, back to control valve sticking.

So correct me if I am wrong ...isn't the control valve physically attached to the control lever ? And if so and I can move the control lever up and down shouldn't the control valve move in and out as well ? I am able to move the lever in what appears to be its full range.
If it is "sticking", when I take it apart what should I look for and what are the remedies for what I may find ?
Thanks

Been a while but if I remember right there are springs on the control lever so if the control valve sticks the lever does not get bent.

ot exactly a "direct connection" between touch control lever & the control valve. The control valve is spring loaded, with the spring acting to move the valve to a "lower" position if no other forces were acting on it. When the touch control lever is moved to lower, that operates an eccentric on touch control lever shaft such as to remove any lever forces & allows spring to move valve to "lower". In other words, the touch control lever does NOT pull the control valve. On the other hand, when touch control lever is moved to "lift" position, the eccentric and associated linkage does directly apply force against the control valve & spring & pushes the valve into the body.....this is a more 'direct' connection than lower. What to look for? That the control valve follows the touch control lever movement. If lever is moved toward lower & valve spool does not follow, then it is likely stuck. If it were not stuck & lever is moved such as to let the spring move the valve, then valve would follow linkage as the valve moves and spring relaxes. Probably as clear as mud, but think of using your hand to compress a spring (direct force), but as you remove hand, the spring simply relaxes. In this case the "relaxing spring" pulls the valve out to the lower position. If stuck, then remove spool from body, clean spool & body, inspect for foreign matter, galling, etc. and feel for free movement.
