850 Position Control Troubleshooting

The 3-point lift on my 850 works well in terms of raising and carrying a load without dropping, and with implements that require the lift to be fully lowered and engage the ground with their full weight such as a disc or blade. Trying to use the position control in between is another story. I can generally get the implement to the level I need, but not smoothly. I basically have to raise it above my target height, lower the lift lever until the arms start to drop, and then "catch" the implement where I want it by raising the lift lever to stop its fall. This works, but it sometimes takes a couple of tries.

The draft control lever moves between draft and position control, but is VERY stiff. Not so stiff that I have to use a wrench or a hammer to move it, but much stiffer than I would expect (I don't have another tractor to compare it to). I can't say for sure that there is a big difference in the lift's behavior between draft and position control, but I'm not exactly sure what to look for.

I need (want badly) to get the position control working more smoothly before summer, but I'm not sure where to start. I assume my first step is going to be pulling the hydraulic lift cover. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Also, what parts am I almost certain to need? The http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Ford-800_Hydraulic-Lift-Cover-Repair-Kit_LCRK5564.html seems like a good start.

Thanks.

Remove the lift cover, renew the lift piston O-ring and back up washer, replace the cam follower pin, and perform the draft and position control adjustments following the "Alternative" (special tools not required) procedures in the I & T FO-20 manual.

Properly adjust the draft control spring tension before performing the adjustments and thoroughly lubricate the cam and follower pin with heavy grease.

The hydraulic sump can be thoroughly cleaned while the lift cover is off.

Thanks Dean! I feel like I've seen this discussed here recently, but what is a good source for a new cam follower pin? CNH dealer only?

Brian

I have about 75 of them(why is another story).Need your address and I will mail you a couple
email is open

I have a nearby CNH dealer who keeps them in stock and always buy from them.

I know of no other convenient source for the OEM cam follower pin.

WayneIA, thanks a lot. I've attempted to send you an email with my address through the site's email tool. Please let me know if you don't have it soon.
