Valve Job Cost

Looking at buying a 641 that has an unbelievably straight body, new tires, excellent hydraulics. The problem is it smokes. The owner stated that according to his compression check, the rings were ok, but the tractor needed a valve job..
The price is right even with the smoking, but I was just wondering about how much it would run me to have a good valve job done on it.
Also, I have fairly good mechanical skills, so is this something I should tackle (with the exception of the machining), or should I just let the shop take care of everything? Thanks for your input.

If it smokes it's likely rings,it's hard to tell if it's just the valves with a compression check only. You should be able to do the labor yourself,I would take the head to a shop to do the vale work and then check the clearance in the cylinders to determine if it needs rings or sleeves.

The question is when does it smoke IF its at an idle or deceleration or when you first start it up look at the valve stem seals. I have a 50 Massey that really smokes at an idle but if you pull it it would hardly use any oil. New seals no smoke.

I would have him explain is theory on how he came about that conclusion then report back...

I would deduct for the smoke are live with it if the price was that damm good...

I haven't seen the tractor yet. He's an older fellow that has a farm near my brother's farm. He is now retired and is liquidating some of his equipment. He offered the tractor to me for $800.00 if I wanted it, but he then told me of the smoking. I think $800 is a pretty damn good price, don't you hobo? The rear tires are almost new, they're worth that much.
I'm driving down the first of next week to look it over, I'll post back my findings. Thanks for your help.

I think I could look over a little smoke at that price if I wanted it...
 ... Don't forget to act stupid and ask what equipment goes with it...
