I have a generator that fella wants me to check, I have taken apart and cleaned, brushes look to be good, nothing appears to be broke, but when I spin at high speed I can't any voltage to light up tester, any ideas? Thanks for any help

with the pitiful little bit of info you provided, i'm going to attempt to use 'the force' to divine what you might or might not have done.

so.. stand back.. don't want anyone to accidentally get choked or lightning to shoot out of my hands.

hmm.. cloudy...

So. what did you do to test it other than spinning it?

did you apply bat ground to case, and bat hot to armature and field? that would be a standasrd motor test. that test also polarizes it.

at that point, a good thest would be to again, hook bat ground to case, hook armature to field and spin with a volt meter from ground to armature. it should bootstrap quick. next test with a load like a headlamp from armature to headlamp to ground, spinning, and armature hooked to field. can also run armature thru ammeter to bat hot and run it.

Well, on a Famall or McCormick that I am use to, I put in vise, hook test meter on armature side, use impact to turn rpms, and I get good voltage if nothing is wrong, this one I can't seem to get it to do anything. It's hasn't worked since he got the tractor, but I don't have the tractor either

generator is not a generator.......they come in different flavors. They have different connections to make different generators charge. No "one size fits all here". If you want to spin it in a vice, polarize it first, then connect Field and ARM together & spin it.
