Hi all. Thanks to the folks on the N forum I went and bought my first tractor - a '57 650. Here's some pics.

Serious question - how does the tranny work? How does the shift pattern co-relate to the mechanical action of the leaver? It pulls up and down and swings around but what position is which gear?

The starter is shot so it's in the shop getting looked at. Wonder what shipping for a new one from YT would cost to Canada.

Thanks 4 lookin'. :)

The 5-speed has an unusual pattern, but it's pretty handy, once you get the hang of it
I'm going from memory, and it's been awhile since I've owned one... but I think it's 3rd and reverse at the top. Forward for third, back for reverse. 1st and 2nd in the middle. Hardest to find, and probably least used. Push it all the way down for 4th and 5th. I think 4th is forward and 5th is back.

With that loader, you will probably like the 3rd/reverse on the top gate of the tranny, kind of like a poor man's (non synchro) shuttle shift. The pattern is stamped on the top cover of the transmission, but it is confusing until you realize that horizontal on the pattern is actually up and down and vertical corresponds to fore/aft. good setup once you get used to it. Congrats on the new tractor. I love my '56 850.

fordfarmer, you are right and it is handy once you get used to it. I guarantee you will have it in 1st, middle and forward, go for reverse and put yourself on the hood because you just put it in 2nd.!

I have never experienced anything like that, probably because it wants to go up to the top level due to the spring pressure.

(quoted from post at 12:35:05 04/15/15) Should I get a seat belt?

For safety reasons you do not want a seat belt if the tractor does not have a ROPS (Roll Over Protection System), as if the tractor rolls you will be held in place and get pinned under it and possibly crushed, so having no seat belt will allow you to jump or be thrown from the tractor in the event of a rollover, but there is still a chance of getting pinned under it. If it has a ROPS, then a seat belt is recommended as it will keep you in place and the ROPS will protect you from getting crushed in the event of a rollover.
