641 rear main seal

Hi Everyone Any body know some trick of the trade to get the upper part of rear main seal out of a 1960 641 four cly gas?.I have the eng out and on a stand upside down. I did loosening mains and removed the middle and rear it's the rope type and just being tuff to get it to move. I do have the eng upright when trying. Thanks all.

Sometime back there was a small corkscrew type rope oil seal tool available in the auto part stores. You screwed it into the rope seal and then pulled on the wire cable it was attached to. It was also used on certain car engines. If you can find one, this it would be the thing to use. The other thing to try is a small diameter piece of plastic rod like "acetal".

It SOUNDS like you are trying to remove it without removing the crank. Your time is too valuable for that!

Just want to thank everyone for there help. when I purchased the tractor I was told the eng, was rebuilt about 10 yrs ago the guy died a short time after rebuild so I was just trying to change dry out seal and gaskets. just did not want to take the crank out but may have to if you are saying you can't get it with crank in. It ran great no smoke just a lot of oil in front of trans when I took it out. I am putting this 641eng into my 621. Thanks to all this is a great site. Dan!!!

It can be done remember you are playing with fire...
You can try and drive it out enoufh with a punch to grab the other end .. I have ground down a screwdriver the fit the slot with a little radius so I can drive it our farther... If the engine is out the crank is coming out if I do it...

Google Lisles rear main seal tool and you will get some info on how to ga about it if you dare...

it was called a "sneaky pete" made by lisle. Sears sold them as well as lots of autostores.

I have a "Sneaky Pete" that I bought a long time ago. I decided though that it wasn't worth my time to take it out of its wrapper.

Back in the day they were around $40  they did not work as well as advertised and did break you were out 40.... @ 10/12 a hr labor you could work around it... I learned to charge off the expense they were not worth it then and not worth it now...

used em in the shop for years... in some applications they worked well, in some engines where the seal was oversized, nothing worked well, but they were better than nothing.
