Ford 1700 stuck in 4th range!

1979 Ford 1700, completely stuck in 4th range. The lever will not budge! Otherwise it works fine, but I [b:314a720a80]reeeeeeally[/b:314a720a80] need the use of my lower gears :?

How do I get it unstuck? The former owner mentioned something about loosening two bolts at the rear of the transfer case, but wasn't very specific.

One suggestion I received said to jack up the rear end, and whack the lever with with a hammer while slowly turn the rear wheels. Anybody ever heard of that?

Any other ideas?

(quoted from post at 20:56:56 04/11/15) Hello, did you ever get your answer about how to free the shifter?
I think I can help.

I never received a reply (until you, just now) but I did finally get it un-stuck by studying the service manual and then just doing some creative manipulation of the shifter. I guess from now on I just really need to be gentle when shifting ranges ... kinda par for the course with an older tractor.

Thanks so much for replying :D

Your welcome, same thing happened to me when I first got my 1700. So do you still have your 1700 and does it have a front end loader on it? I have some questions about connecting hydraulic lines? thanks

Yes and yes. I've only had it about three months, and the former owner installed some quick disconnects for the hydraulics on the front bucket. How did you get your transmission un-stuck?
