3000 rear axle noisy

I have a 3000 manual 8 speed. When in low gear the rear axle is very noisy, sounds like a howling sound. Does not do it in higher gears. Very noticeable in reverse. Oil level in rear is fine. What could it be and is there any way to inspect without major disassembly?

Sure it's not chattering brakes? Next time you run it, put some pressure on the pedals and see if it stops. Not familiar with the usage of gears in that tranny; whether or not F and R are on the same shaft. Can't change to thicker oil as the hyd sump is shared.

I do know that mechanical assemblies can spoof you in trying to locate a sound. Sounds like it's one place when in reality it's some where else.

So, how does the diff know which gear you are in if you aren't under a load where you'd have more pressure to transmit and gear interfaces are maybe/probably worn?
