1959 FORD 841D

I JSUT POSTED AN IMAGE OF MY TRACTOR ON HERE. I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON IT. MINE HAS AN AIR STACK AND I DONT SEE THEM ON OTHER 841D. MINE ALSO HAS THE EXHAUST STACK. MINE HAS POWER STEERING BUT DOESNT SEEM TO WORK VERY WELL. MY PROOF METER ISNT WORKING AND I AM TRYING TO DETERMINE HOW TO BEST FIX IT. I WOULD PREFER TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL METER. ANYONE THAT CAN HELP, WOULD BE GREATLY APPREACAITED. ITS NOT A SHOW TRACTOR ITS GOING TO BE A WORK TRACTOR

Robert,
Welcome to the Ford Board.
Here is the picture of your tractor.
It looks like a pretty good old rig.
It must have had a set of pie weights on it at one time.
Someone here would buy those special stud nuts if you don't need them.
Others here can tell you about the air intake and hour meter..
I can help you with the power steering but you will have to promise NOT to type in all CAPITAL LETTERS any more.
What is the PS doing or not doing?

Robert, Congratulations on choosing the right brand! I have a 971D with exactly the same stacks. They are very common. To start investigating the proof meter, first establish that the cable is turning at the meter. Just thread the end of the cable off and start it up. You can look up at the back of the meter above the battery or down past the back of the fuel tank.

Nice tractor! Your air stack is exactly like mine. Dust cup was manufactured in Minneapolis, MN. Can't now remember the name of the company, but being a Minnesotan, I thought that was neat.

Yes, hang onto those extension nuts or sell them to someone on the board.

Colin, MN

There's probably $160.-180 worth of lug nut extensions on there. I went to school on that. I'm wondering how the steering wheel got bent? Perhaps it had a loader on it at some point.

sorry for the caps, was on my work pc. we have to type all in caps. the power steerings doesnt seem to be working at all. when i first got it, the fluid was low. i filled it with power steering fluid and finally got the air out. it improved it some but still doesnt turn freely. i am thinking maybe has something to do with the fact that the pump sits crooked on the engine. i have a new problem that has arisen. when i first got it i ran it at low rpms all the time and had no problem. now if i run it at higher rpms, 3/4 to full throttle, it runs fine then dies. this poor thing has been abused.

took it off while running and it wasnt spinning. i didnt know if it had to be in gear or not. but i am betting not. my father in law has a case 885 that i used until getting this one.

classic fuel obstruction. Have you changed the filter yet? Check also for flow at the filter outlet for good steady flow for at least 30 seconds. When I had plug in the fuel line of my 9000 it would run slow all day but at high RPMs it would die. The fuel was only dripping out of the line due to a line blockage.

determined the fuel problem, gummed up fuel filter, low fuel flow coming to the filter, tank is coming off for a good cleaning. its nasty
figured out meter also, cable broke, gotta order a new one

(quoted from post at 15:50:10 03/19/14) cable broke, i am seeing 2 different selections for the cable, looks like a standard and a steel, got any suggestions?

The standard plastic coated is what probably 98% of these old Fords have on them. Two of mine have steel jacket on them however. My 971D has the original type steel and it is all rusty. My trailer queen 961 has the shiny new steel jacketed one just because she is a trailer queen. I am going to clean up the rusty one and coat it with clear lacquer because it looks much more original than the new one. I worked on the Power steering pump mount quite a bit to get it to be nearly vertical. I will look at it again tomorrow and see if I can remember something that I did that can help you.

this is driving me nuts, i cleaned the line through the filter and to the pump. bleed the whole system, then she fired right up. left it running at higher rpms, going to check my charging system and did the same thing, died out, starved for fuel. i am beginning to think this thing is cursed.

i have a question, just thought of this, on the fuel return from the head to the tank, it was leaking badly. i replaced the line with a copper oil line. could it be, the line is too small and is causing me problems. i didnt have this problem until, i tried to fix the leak.
any ideas

injection pump overhaul. she has bits of governor retainer ring lodged in the return. oops! just read your post on page 2. I was basing my comment on a restricted return line, so guessing your replacement line is the culprit.

what size should that return line be, 1/8? or bigger. could i make the return line bigger? if thats the case, i may tee it into the bigger return line and do away with that head ache line i cant find.

i have no fluid coming out of the injector lines. so i am betting you are right, i need to find a kit, i hear its just o-rings and gaskets, any clue were i can find one

It is a little more than O-rings and gaskets. If you give me your email I will send you the manual and you can peruse it to see if you really want to do it. Did the police come to check out your new tractor?

no, that's my main job, I have 4 more years until I retire, then its a farming I go. I have 12 acres that currently has 15 goats, 30 chickens and 2 great pryenses. I am a southern popo, meaning, we make no money at all, only benefit is that retiring early, draw 50 percent of my pay and get my insurance. so its going to be real job time, lol. anyways, my email is [email protected] thanks

found out after I replaced my injector pump that I had a line that collapsed at high rpms. now that I fixed that, she runs great. I do have a question. I have no bumper on the front of my tractor. I do however, have a bracket that has 3 holes which studs stick through. I have 1 nut on the center stub. the bracket comes off the front and has a L bracket on it with 2 bolt holes. anybody got a clue what this is. I see where the bumpers actually bolt to the front axle, but what is that other thing?
