It smokes more than Grandma

I would start with a compression test. Dry, then wet.
If adding a teaspoon of oil for the wet test brings the numbers
up then it is probably rings.

If the tractor has sat a while, those might be freed up by soaking
them in ATF for a week or so then working the snot out of it.

Can't say if it was the ATF or the MMO or a combination, since
neither did it alone. It wasn't until I took it out and worked it
pretty hard that it cleared up like that.

ATF is definitely cheaper and I would try that first.

Those pictures were about two years ago.
Here it is finished in September of last year.

As Royce posted, a compression test would be first. If the first puff is less than half of the final puff, then suspect rings. If compression is low, and they are adjoining cylinders and roughly half each other I would suspect a head gasket issue. Compression testing numbers will tell a lot. If it is valves, cylinder leakage testing will find the one(s).
