Neighbor had me stop by to look at tractor, it quit pulling, rear wheels locked up and whining noise coming from front of transmission. What should I look at first, no experience on these transmissions. I have heard they gave a lot of trouble. It is a diesel I guess around 64 model?

Does PTO still turn? Pull side cover with hyd dipstick, see if shaft turning, if is something in rearend broke or sheared ring gear rivits. Axles do break but will roll.

If the PTO doesn't spin, there is a vary probability that the transmission shaft to engine has spun through the splines.(noise at the front of tranny) Go to John Smith's Old Ford Tractor's site . (Not good with links) He has a replacement exchange package for this situation.

Hearsay is problematic. These transmissions are no more prone to fail, if serviced properly, than anything else of that vintage.

You asked: The first thing you should look at is a service manual on the version of the SOS your looking at!!!!! Don't touch the thing unless and until you know what you're doing!!!!!

Then, and only then, follow the others advice, check for PTO operation. Then, disconnect the Traction disconnect and ascertain that there isn't a problem in the rear axle.
