Ford 640 steering gear box, lube

how is steering box lubricated? I don't find any place to check gear oil, if so equipped. :( I have some leakage around sector shafts.

My old tractor has a oil filler screw plug under the battery,
Take battery off there it is on top of the steering gearbox.

Some install John Deere or Case IH corn head grease in old gearboxes that leak.

Corn head grease is more of a heavy oil, super lube and does not run or leak out like
gear oil.

You will find a fill plug on the front side of the housing behind the battery.

Replace the sector shaft seals (externally replaceable) and fill with CNH pourable high EP lube.

Alternatively, you can take the easy way out and replace the fill plug with a zerk and pump in corn head grease.

Thank You, I'll give it a try.

look for lawnmower transmission grease called "00" or "double aught". Same as cornhead grease. Can find it in the mower department of some stores. Especially where snapper lawn mowers are sold.

Ok, I've located the fill plug, but am not able to determine the "full level". How do you check the oil level??
