Ford 681 D-S

Hello everyone. First off you have a great forum here. I would like to pick your collective brain. I just bought a Ford tractor from a relative . I have searched all over the place and come up with a model number but serial number was unreadable except for the last 4 numbers. The top number is 681 D-S. The tractor appears to have a Sherman transmission. Is this what they are calling a select-o-matic? The pictures i've found of the select-o-matic look completely diffrent. As soon as i can figure out how to transfer pictures from an iphone i'll post them.

Second question. I can't seem to get the step up down lever to shift to any other position other than what its in. It runs like its in high gear. You would have trouble mowing in first. It's pretty fast. Any suggestions to switch gearing would be appreciated.

Well if it is in fact a 681 that means it has the SOS transmission which also means it does not have a Sherman. The Sherman's only worked with the 4 speed transmissions.

I need to get pictures up. It has a 4 speed shifter and a shifting plaque and handle that appears to be a sherman tranny. I'll post pictures of the model number also. I could be wrong. You all appear to be the most knowledgable ford tractor people on the internet. It's pretty rough but i stole it. Just trying to figure out what i have and what parts to order.

That 8 may in fact be a 4 because the model would then be a 641D-S. D will stand for diesel so is it a diesel?? The S stands for factory installed Sherman. Very likely to be a Sherman combo which means you pull it up and that is over drive. Down is underdrive and then go to neutral and pull out side ways and it should come out about a 1/2 inch then up and that is the standard gears which you use most of the time for ALL PTO work

It is in fact a diesel and has a 4 speed plus reverse shifter. I'm trying to get a picture up of the model number. The 8 is the most readable number. It may be tomorrow until i get pictures up. I'm computer illiterate. Thanks for replying. This is why i ask. It doesn't make since to me either.

It is hard to read the first digit but the middle sure looks like a 4 from here.

May well be stuck due to not being moved in a long time or maybe just flat out a bad Sherman. If I remember right you should push it forward and down to get it to go into neutral. Been a very long time since I have moved the Sherman combo I have on my 841 out of the standard range since I do not need high or low for much of any thing

Your post stated, verbatim,

Sherman's only work with 4 speeds.

That sentence is 100% incorrect.

Save the lol for when you are correct!

Chris you know better then to jump me in the case we are talking the 601 series not the 9n or 2n

You post stated the Sherman's worked on 4 speeds only.

You can man up and admit it, or continue arguing.

Not my problem, so I won't reply further to this thread.

Again your missing the fact I am talking only the 601 series not the N series so I am in fact correct since the Sherman only works on the 4 speed not the 5 speed or the SOS. I did not say any thing about any other series then the 601 period. What Chris been a long winter and you have to jump on me because your having a bad day

Thanks for the information. Is there a specific shop manual to get for diesel engine or the sherman transmission? or will the IT shop manual have all that covered?

The I-T manual covers both engines be it gas or diesel. Also looks like it covers the Sherman transmissions. But I did have to look to be sure about the transmissions I-T FO-20
