Alt light - 8000

Got every idiot light working on the 8000 except the alt light. The bulb holder would light up my tester, but not the bulb. Thought it was maybe a bad ground somewhere, so I replaced the holder with a new one. The new one is a single wire unit which grounds when you put it in its hole in the back of the gauge. Hooked up the single hot wire, put in a bulb, and it came on when I turned on the key. Problem is, it didn't go off when I started the engine. If it's working, I assume the alt needs checking. If not, what would be the problem?

rong "bulb holder". Why would you thing a two wire could be replaced by a one wire?

I guess because I'm no electrician. The black wire on the original holder was the hot wire in the center (right?), and the yellow wire went to the terminal on the side of the holder. Ground? I don't know. Help me out here. I hate wiring and I'm dumb as a bag of hammers at it.

don't have an 8000 schematic in front of me, but........every idiot light circuit that I have ever seen (gen or alt) all had ign power to one side of bulb and the VR or alt/gen connection to the other side, such that once charging commenced, the VR/alt/gen wire voltage came up to a match with the ign supplied side of the bulb and now with 14 volts on BOTH bulb terminals, the bulb goes dark.

Ok, then. That means the yellow wire should go to the regulator or alt, since the black one in the middle would light the tester w/the switch on. Still unsure why the original holder would light up my tester but not the bulb w/ign on, engine not running. Just had a "duh" moment. I have the shop manual on this tractor. I'll look up a diagram later...
