Ford 3600 Quit

I was in the field today spreading fertilizer with the Ford 3600 diesel. All of a sudden the tractor started slowing down and it finally quit. I walked back to get another tractor to finish the job and to tow the Ford away from the spreader. I unhooked the tractor and I thought I would try it again. It started right up and I drove it back to the shed. When the tractor had quit it wouldn't even turn over. Any ideas the cause of my problem?

If the starter wouldn't turn, then that should be an electrical problem. A diesel shouldn't need anything electrical to continue running unless it's a modern one with an electrical fuel solenoid for a shutoff, so the reason that it quit shouldn't be related to the reason that it wouldn't spin the starter afterwards, but since it started and ran a while later, then both issues might be heat related.

I wasn't completely clear in my original post. The tractor just seemed to be losing power until it quit. I think the reason it wouldn't turn over is because I haven't owned the tractor that long and I forgot to put the high-low lever in neutral. However, I still am puzzled why the tractor seemed to be losing power. This afternoon I ran it for quite awhile and it ran okay.

starving for fuel.. fuel blockage somewhere...debris in tank, filter, water separator is full of water.. could even be fuel cap is not vented correct and creating a vacuum.
