Rear seal

4000su diesel. Installing rear seal. Engine in stand. Rebuilding. Having trouble installing side seals. Can someone share a could procedure for how to install these side seals?

Yes I do! Clean the block and cap real well, then get some clear RTV silicone in a caulking gun tube that has the three and a half inch long tube on the end. Throw thos lousy side seals and bendy little rods in the trash. Torque the cap down, then fill the space with silicone, backing out from the bottom slowly as you fill it. Be sure not to overfill on either side. Use enough silicone so that it ends up just higher than the cap.

Insert the sticks dry and loose making sure they go all the way in. Spray or squirt penetrating oil LIBERALLY to both sides of the cracks. The sticks will absorb the oil and swell up thereby sealing the cracks as intended.
