8000 Ford Engine Oil Pressure Proublems

I posted a few days ago about 8000 loosing oil pressure. I took the freeze out plug under the oil filter out hoping to be able to tell if the drive was stripped but I'm assuming it would be on the lower end of the shaft if it was. I cranked the engine over a few times with the filter off and noticed that it's pumping oil some but no pressure. Would it still pump oil if the oil pump drive was stripped or should I look somewhere else for the problem? Also will that drive pull out of that hole under the filter or is it attached bye something else to the pump? I've got a manual ordered but it'll be a few days before I get it.

You're correct, if the drive was stripped out, it would be on the bottom of that drive gear assembly #4, most likely in the connecting hex shaft. Go ahead and pull the drive gear out, nothing will fall out of place, the connecting female hex coupler #3 will stay put. After you pull out the drive shaft, you might find that the male hex looks OK. If so, then the female adapter is most likely bad. This will require the pan to be dropped.

Yes, I could see how a stripped shaft would spin just enough via friction as to generate just enough flow as to cause you to think the problem is elsewhere.

About the only other cause for very low oil pressure I could think of would be a broken relief valve spring in the pump. I have seen this before on a high hour engine. It was a 9700 as I recall, which is basically the same engine and oiling system.

Here's a pic from the 9700 repair manual. The #3 female hex coupler is my bet, or else the #6 spring.
