A few years ago I built a 172 diesel engine for
my brothers 850. Bored sleeveless block .030
new rings, bearings,good crank. Runs
beautifully good oil pressure very good power.
He has been using it for two years now as his
garden tractor and the odd grading or
bushogging job around town. Thje only problem
Is that sometimes while pulling hard it will
seize up and shut off. Then crank right back up
and runs fine. It has done this many times. It
happened when I used it the other day grading
the other day. After using it all day I was
driving it wide open on the way home and it
seized up. But cranked right back up and went
the rest of the way home. Has me baffled any
Ideas?

I would drop the pan and check out the counterbalance unit that is geared to the crankshaft. Seen those lose a bearing and do that. Problem on the last one, went too long and ruined the crank where it is geared to it.

Is engine actually siezing up or is it just shutting down? When it shuts down does motor turn over rite away? If it does it has a fuel problem and probably not getting fuel.

I would almost bet you got something in tank that sucks into fuel line when it is running and when engine shuts off it floats away from outlet
and lets the fuel flow again.

Make sure fuel supply to the injection pump is OK. Pump may also have the retainer ring breaking apart, the small bits can plug the return system and cause the pump to shutdown, but restart after the housing pressure drops down again. Remove the two screw timing cover on the pump, as fuel comes out look for small bits that look like coffee grounds, if any are found pump needs repair. Broken retainer can cause erratic governor speeds too. If run long enough the steel pins will break off inside, seize the head assembly and break the drive shaft..
