Ford 3000 axle make popping noise

I was using the Ford 3000 with FEL this
weekend. After a few hours of digging gumbo,
the right axle started making a popping/
clicking noise on a hard push. It sounds like
it is coming from the wheel/ axle area. I wasnt
ramming it, just slow steady pushing in 2l and
3/4 throttle. It pops once while pushing then again
when backing up or turning, mostly when locker
pedal is pushed. I have not taken anything
apart or looked at any parts diagrams yet.
First guess is something slipping at the wheel
hub, or could this be around the diff and it
just sound like it is coming from the wheel?

Front or rear axle? If it is the rear, which I assume because you mention the locker pedal, it might be loose lug nuts or loose nuts on the bolts that hold the centers to the rims. If you jack up the right side of the rear axle you should be able to tell if anything it loose on the wheel by trying to to wobble it around by hand.

I didnt put a wrench on the lugs. They dont look loose, no shiny metal from sloppy lug nuts. After a full day of moving dirt, I didnt feel like crawling around on the ground to check it out

deffinately jack the rear and check for loose lug nuts, or rim nuts / pa locks/fasteners.

if that checks out, see if the hub is loose.

I didnt think to check that. Looks like I need to re-torque everything I can get to when I get over the sore back. I was worried about having to change out the axle with loaded tires and figured I would do a little homework before I tore into it... work smarter, not harder kinda thing

The first thing I would check is the bolts that retain the center dish to the wheel. Keep in mind that the nuts can be seized tight on those things and the bolts stretched and loose... so LOOK closely at the bolts and nuts for signs of movement. You may need to torch them off and install new bolts...
If that doesn't cure it, things devolve from there. I'd be looking at the outer wheel bearing after the wheel. To check that you can jack up each side and rock the wheel. If you get up/down movement in the wheel, you have a problem.
