rebuild kits

I might be ordering an engine rebuild kit soon. I see that some kits are for a 3 ring or 4 ring piston and some kits have thin or thick walled sleeves. I assume the thin sleeves allow for larger diameter pistons, and therefore more HP. What is the advantage to a fourth ring? Higher compression?
Thank you

Not sure what engine you're working on, but it's quite possible that a thick-wall sleeve requires boring of the ID once it's installed. These are all I ever use when sleeving a pinholed block, because thin-walled, pre-sized sleeves have a tendency to be not very round once they're installed.

From what little information you have given I will guess you are working on an N series engine. You need to tear down the engine to see which sleeves you have and determine which oil pump you have as there are two different ones. Thin sleeve and thick sleeve engines both use the same size piston. If you have thin sleeves now you can have the block bored to install thick sleeves. The fourth ring on the 4 ring piston is an extra oil ring near the bottom of the piston and opinions vary on which is better, 3 or 4 ring.

We used to use only the 3 ring rebuild kits as the shop manager said there was less friction between ring and sleeve wall
