861 Throttle/Carb Issues

Hey guys I have an issue that is truly confusing me. My 861 throttle seems to get "stuck" after a certain point and continues to rev until what seems like full throttle. I checked all linkages, sprayed some lubricating oil, and cannot see any binding taking place. Could it be something inside the carb? I ask because the carb is old and will not hold a real solid tune.

Throttle controls governor, governor controlls carb.

Wanna test, disconnect throttle flapper from gov rod and
operate it manually. Engine do what you expect? It should.

Now, back to the problem. Look at the throttle to gov and gov to
carb linkage. If no obvious hanging or sticking/spring
problems... then time to look at the gov. Itself.

I'm in SG's camp on this one, sounds like the governor or linkage.
"Could" something hang in the carb? Yes.
I had one do it with a broken screw in the throttle plate.
It would work fine until the plate vibrated to the side enough to bind.
His recommended test, running it by hand, is how I found it.

Sure. Re-read my previous message!

Linkage is as follows.

Throttle to governor

Governor to carb!

Your carb has 3 things hooked to it!

Fuel line!

Choke rod pull by your left knee!

And the throttle control rod from the governor.

I bet if you follow that 3rd rod from the carb to the front of the
tractor it will lead you to the governor. :)

Mind you that won't tell you much. .. unless you have Xray
vision .

At this point I'm advising that you either need to get a service
manual and a mechanically inclined friend for a fun day of work,
or find a person locally to service it.

But DO look over all the external linkage and springs first.

With machine off pull the hand throttle back and forth and see
what it does . The action forward of the bell crank at the front
and along left side of the engine is where you need to be
looking, including timing cover area.

Follow the throttle rod from the carb forward to where the spring
hooks to the long vertical arm leading down. The bottom of that
vertical arm connects to your governor on the front of the engine.

You will need a service manual to get it fixed right if that's the issue.
A simple binding/linkage issue would be easier.

I'll disconnect and check things out tomorrow. As you guys stated hopefully it's a linkage issue and not the governor.

Before digging into the governor, run through the governor adjustment procedure in your owner's manual.

Well after checking, and checking, I see no issues with the linkages. Now all I need is the purchase of a manual to adjust the governor. Being that this is the original governor from when the tractor was made what's the likely hood that it's out completely?

I have have inspected governors on two of my Fords in the course of doing more major work and found no problems except that a new O-ring on the shaft coming out of the housing can cause binding. I would estimate that chances that it is governor is 2%, linkage, 98%. so I will suggest again that you go through the adjustment procedure as explained in the owner's manual.

Can anyone post the governor adjustment procedures?

It is in your original owner's manual. If you don't have one there are always some repops for sale on eBay.
