I have no idea what size it is, try adding a ruler into the photo to give an indication of size. But, that looks like the rivet that holds the crown wheel onto the carrier, had the same thing come out of the rear axle drain on a Ford 3000.

Is it safe to operate with these missing and what am I looking for on the shaft seal / gasket to stop leak which is why I dug into this

Whatever force caused those two to shear and fall caused all the rest to nearly shear. Your tractor has virtually no pulling ability until you fix it.

Could be that the ring gear came off on a previous owner and was repaired and those pieces of the rivets were just left in there. But you won't know for sure unless you open it up to look at the differential.

Like others have said "ring gear rivet" You will have to pull the left trumpet to replace the rivets with bolts (my 1970 3400 came with bolts) The job is not difficult but it is heavy and extra cribbing and caution a must. I did this job a few years ago and have more pictures.

If you are lucky, those are leftover digits from a previous repair.

As for the PTO shaft, since you drain Hyde and fifty, 4 bolts and the shaft assy and bearing carrier pull out.

I'll translate for SouNdguy, he has tiny keys on his phone. He was tellin you that since you have already drained both the hydraulic and differential sumps, all you have left is four bolts to pull the PTO shaft, bearing and seal assy.

I always just thought that SouNd was from da hood an that wuz deep bruh talk. ya dig? ;)

So what all would be involved in replacing rivets (anyone know what years had em) with bolts? Is the ring gear tapped like on a truck 9" or are they through holes where you need to tap something?

I don't think you need to tap anything, just put nuts on the ends of the bolts like in the pictures that Bruce posted.

Bolts? Then what are the rivets for? I thought it was rivets holding the ring gear to the differential. And the fix was to put bolts in.

That's what I was saying. You need to get the rivets out, either by drilling them out or cutting the heads off, and then replace the rivets with bolts and nuts. The point I was trying to make was that you shouldn't remove all of the rivets first before putting the bolts in, or it will be harder to keep everything together and lined up. When you remove one rivet install a bolt and nut in its place, then remove the next rivet, install a bolt and nut in its place, and so on.
