Another SOS issue

I got this 681 last fall, jump started it and
drove it off the trailer and parked it by the
shop. I have been getting it going a little at
a time since then. Replaced the starter,
rebuilt the Diesel fuel pump, new ignition
switch, replaced the water pump and stuff like
that. Well I got the motor going good but ...
when I shifted it into gear it didn't move,
forward or reverse, any gear. I checked the Z
bracket disengagement and it is engaged. I am
new to SOS and was looking forward to trying it
out.

Does anyone have a clue what could cause this?

You state that you "drove it off the trailer". I assume that means that the tractor has moved under it's own power since you've owned it. If you haven't messed with the traction disengagement then I can only think of two things wrong- the fluid has drained out or the Torque Limiting Clutch has stripped out which would be just about impossible if the tractor hasn't been used.
Did you check the fluid level?
Does the PTO engage and turn?
 
Thanks Texas. Your are correct, I winched it
onto my trailer, brought it home and worked on
it to get it started and backed it off the
trailer and then drove it forward to the shop
and then backed it into place. Therefore I
felt it was worth putting a little $$ into the
engine which I did and now ... non working
transmission. It was colder then.

I'll check the fluid level this morning as well
as the PTO operation. Then I will try it while
it is cold this morning. Go from there.

Do you know if the Ford SOS for 2000/4000
series is the same as this 1959 681? I'll be
needing a manual and that's what I find on
eBay.
 
If you haven't checked the fluid then it's possible there might be water in the sump, and if it is cold then there could be ice or slush blocking things, or it may have an incorrect fluid in it that is too thick in colder temperatures.
 

While the 2000/4000 SOS is compatible w/the 01 series tractors, it is not identical. In fact the early *000 transmission is a much improved unit compared to the *01 transmission.

There is a separate service manual supplement for the 4 cylinder 2000 and 4000 Select-O-Speed transmission. They changed to a Direct Drive Clutch (DDC) transmission in 1963 when the ag chassis 2000 & 4000 models came out. The earlier ones used an over Running Clutch (ORC) that could free wheel when going down hill in certain gears. Ford did have a program to retrofit the newer transmission into older tractors so a lot of '01 S-O-S tractors how have the later DDC transmissions, but they would need the service manual supplement as well. Checked the fluid. It's full and a nice honey color. Smells
normal..
PTO does not turn.
Tomorrow I plan to drain the fluid, clean the sump screen and
refill with new to be sure it's the right type and does not have water in it.

Will the sump screen hole drain it properly?

Does the SOS share oil with the hydraulics? The oil on the
dipstick by the PTO lever looks the same as the SOS oil to
me.

Also I remember that I sprayed the SOS shifter with lubricant
to free it up some. It was stiff at first but by working with it I got
it two move around much easier. Could I have messed up the
shift cable some how?
 
3 seperate sumps for rear end, hydraulics and trans. All use 134d fluid and if the intermediate seals leak they will end up sharing fluid.

The screen on the lower left is the drain, just pull it all the way out.

The SOS originally used a different oil than the rear end and likely different than the hydraulics. Many now use the same oil in all 3. I still use the heavier 80W-90 gear grease in the rear end, but use a UTF in both the SOS and hydraulics.

Did the tractor operate after you "freed up" the shifter? If not, then yes, you likely broke the cable or screwed up its adjustment.

The suction screen was the only case drain the early SOS had. I'm not sure when they added a drain plug, but know my DDC equipped tractors have one.
 
Didnt try to operate the transmission until now because I had
the injector pump and water pump off. If I screwed up the
cable or its adjustment what sort of repair am I lookink at? I
should have a manual today.

That's tuff, if not impossible, to call from a distance. Could be a minor adjustment to a cable or even shifter parts.
 
I'll change the oil and clean the suction screen
and go from there. Thanks for you advice, I'll
probably be back with more questions.
