My neighbor has a 1720 that pops out of forward on the shuttle shift going down hill. When under load it is fine, as well as other gears. Any ideas? It has been this way for quite a few years he said and bought the tractor new. I have my thoughts, but was wondering if there was a common problem with these tractors or not. Thanks in advance.

Was this a common issue with these tractors? If the sycro was bad you would have problems getting into gear. Have detents been any issue, or wear on the gear thrust surfaces.

These transmissions don't have any common faults, they are very durable. Bent forks happen when drivers get rammy with the shifter. Synchronizers wear when direction changes happpen many, many times at higher speeds. Nobody will know what your neighbor's problem is until it is opened up.
