Identifying a ford 4000

I need some help identifying a ford tractor. I was told it was a ford 4400 1969 but i would like to confirm that. I'm having a little trouble making sense of the serial numbers. Reason behind this is because i need to tune the selectomatic transmission and the manual i have for that does not seem to match what i have. Manual is for a 1966 so that could be the reason but just trying to confirm the model and year before i start messing with things that are beyond my understanding.

Serial Number are as follows:

On right lower side of engine:
C7NN 615 AK
9M 9
D168495

On Front right side of engine:
L
60803
9M248

Transmission
8B20

Rear End
20 8 80
05NN 4024
MH

Any help would be appreciated mostly just looking for year so i can figure out what the specs are for tuning the bands on the selectomatic

Hi, welcome and congratulations on your new tractor. The only number that you posted that is a serial number is the number D168495 which is the serial number of the engine, but those are not documented as to what dates the engine serial numbers correspond to.

The rest of the numbers you have posted are other types of numbers. Some are casting numbers which just tell about when the casting was designed, not when that particular part was made. Some are production codes which do tell us when individual components were assembled and we can make educated guesses about the rest of the tractor based on those numbers. I'll try to interpret the numbers you have posted and then make some educated guesses about the rest of the tractor as a whole.

On right lower side of engine:
C7NN 615 AK - This should most likely be C7NN 6015 AK - This is the casting number for the engine block. That particular casting number is for a 201 ci engine block, which is what the 4000 series tractor used.

9M 9 - This is the production code (date code) for when that block was actually cast, which is December 9, 1969.

D168495 - This is the serial number for the engine which as i said above, doesn't tell us anything about the date the tractor was made, but the D at the beginning does tell us that it is a 4000 series engine and that it was made after April 1, 1968, because prior to that date the code for a 4000 series engine was the letter P.

On Front right side of engine:
L - Not sure what this is.

60803 - Not sure what this is

9M248 - Most likely should be 9M24B - This is the production code for the assembly of the engine. The first production code above was when the block was cast, and this one is when the engine as a whole was assembled, which was December 24, 1969 during the day shift.

Transmission
8B20 - This should be the production code for when the transmission was assembled, which would be February 20, 1968, which is almost 2 years earlier than the production code for the engine above.

Rear End
20 8 80 - Not sure what this is.

05NN 4024 - This is most likely C05NN 4024 which would be the casting number for one of the components of the rear axle (left or right trumpet or center housing, or hydraulic top cover, depending on where on the rear end it was found).

MH - Not sure what this is.

There should be more numbers on the transmission. Did you get that one number from the left or right side? Did you look at the same spot on the opposite side of the transmission for more numbers?

Since we only have two production codes to go on, the engine and transmission, and they are almost two years apart, it is likely that either the engine or transmission was swapped out at some point, as generally all of the production codes for the major sub-assemblies on a particular tractor, like the engine, transmission, hydraulic top cover, etc. are within a few weeks to a few months of one another and the tractor itself was assembled a few weeks or months after that.

If the transmission is original and the engine was swapped in later then it is likely a 1968 tractor. If the engine is original and the transmission was swapped in at a later time, then it is likely a 1970 tractor since the engine was assembled on Christmas eve 1969, but I guess it could have gone into a tractor that was assembled the following week and made it out the door as a 1969 tractor.

If you can find more numbers and post them here we can get closer to the truth, because, as they said on the X-Files, the truth is out there.

Thank you for the help,

The code off of the transmission was off of the
left side near the middle. I was unable to find
the tractor serial number...? not sure exactly
where to look, I was hopeing with the other
numbers we could narrow it down. There are no
stampings on the flat area just after the
starter. From my research that is where the
serial number should be?

I will look for more numbers on the
transmission as that is really the item im not
interested in for getting proper instructions
for band adjustment. Sounds like the
transmission is a 1968 model

Step one - look up - if there is a shiny sticker in the grime on the underside of the hood, it should have all the numbers on it 0at least for the tractor the hood was on when they left the factory.

Step two, find the starter. Find a flat surface facing the sky just above a vertical surface with two big threaded holes facing you. Clean off decades of grime and look for 3 lines of stamped-in letters and numbers.

Step three, search for Oaktree ford tractor page and get the full decoder for numbers on 3-cylinder thousand series tractors, "production codes and model numbers"

Yes, that is where the tractor serial number should be. If it was made after late 1967, then there might also be a foil sticker on the underside of the right hood panel with the Model Number, Serial Number and Unit Number (Production code for the tractor) along with the production codes for all of the various sub-assemblies.

Since you mention band adjustments, I assume that it is the Select-o-Speed transmission. The S-O-S transmissions did not change, and the procedures were the same, for all 3 cylinder 4000 series S-O-S tractors for the entire range of production from 1965 through 1975.

(quoted from post at 12:53:52 03/05/15) There are no

The obvious flat surface is the vertical one. The numbers are not there. They are on the one that's horizontal and harder to see.

I looked on the horizontal part of the...well whatever you want to call the giant lug of metal even felt it with my hand to see if there were any bumps...nothing...I will look again.

Will also check the underside of the hood.
