Ford 661 Diesel

I've been doing a lot of shopping recently for a tractor- I have looked mostly at 8 & 9ns, as well as some other makes (Ferguson 20, 30, etc). In my searching, I have run across another potential option- A nice running Diesel powered 661 workmaster.

My intended use for the tractor is maintaining a gravel driveway, with a grader or box scrape. Other than that, it's something of a 'toy' to tinker with, work on, and eventually restore.

I do a lot of my own work on my cars and boats, but I have never owned or worked on a Diesel.

Is this tractor a good choice? Are parts available? I can't seem to find that much information about them on the web.

I looked at it today after work, and took it for a quick drive. Seems to be in good shape- Started right up, ran without smoking. It has been painted recently, and they did a fairly good job. He put new fenders on it, and the rest of the sheet metal is pretty decent. I'm good at metal repairs/body work, and anything that was wrong with it would be an easy fix for me.

He's asking $3000, but I think it could be had for $2600, Delivered to me. Seems to be a pretty good deal based on prices of 'N' series tractors around here- in the same condition, they go for that much or more.

I want to go back and take a better look at it- Is there anything in particular that I need to look out for on this particular tractor?

Thanks!

The 144 diesel engine has become somewhat of an orphan. Parts will be harder to come by than those in it's big brother, the 172. The 172 diesel is found in the 801, 901 and early 4000 series tractors.

A 661D would be a sweet little tractor to own.
If the engine runs good now you could likely run it for many, many years without needing parts.
My pal Kenny has a 641D and his machinest was able to get the parts to rebuild it here about 4 years ago.
That 144 would just sip the fuel.
It is a WAY better tractor than an N and around here it would not last long even at a $3500 price - especially since it has live pto.
Mind you that tires are Expensive so do include their condition in your factoring.
Edit:
PS, Anytime I look at a tractor to buy I always insist that the seller does NOT start it or warm it up before I get there. I want to hear it start cold.

If it was a gas 661 I would say buy it in a heartbeat That being said it may be a reliable engine, and it may be a money pit. jmo
