841 Steering Gear

I have a '59 841 that I am refurbishing. Not
looking to make it perfect, just run a lot better,
and do some work. I am getting the head
remachined, so with lots of parts off I can
finally get a good look at everything. One thing
I was checking out is the steering column and
gear. Never had any problems there, but thought I
ought to look into fluid there and if should be
changed out. I took out the fill plug and
breather and it looks
like dirty old grease in
there. My manual syas should be refilled with M-
4t38 lubricant. What is this these days? I can't
drain out what's in there. Think I should just
leave well enough alone, or while I have time and
have access should I do a little preventative
work? Any other suggestions for taking care of stuff while have things half torn apart?
Thanks

It's standard to put grease in there now a days so it's normal. I forget what kind of grease, corn head I think? I would leave it alone unless it really is dirty or needs rebuilt.

I used "00 grease", from Tractor Supply online. Go to google and type in "tractor supply 00 grease" or "Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00" and it will pop up. 5 bucks a quart. I think I bought two quarts, but can't remember if I used both.

Related question: is there any way to remove oil from the steering box without taking it off? I just put everything back together after a big split and found a pretty significant leak. I'd rather not have to tear into the steering column again...

pedestal usually refers to the front end of a narrow front, under the bolster. But the 841 is wide front.
