CL 801 find

I found an 801 gas on CL Called the guy said it has live power so I assume that makes it an 861 could use some input I know very little about fords other than having driven one as a kid looking for something for the wife to use with a finish mower and me to play in a garden after i retire

The 801 is a series of models of that tractor. The 861, 871, and 881 all have live PTO. The 861 has the 5 speed with 2 stage clutch and the other 2 are the SOS type transmissions. All have the 172 engine and around 45HP. That all said many people on Craig's list do not have a clue what they own. I know of a guy who has a 9N ford and he tried to list it as a 1953 9N which there never where any made since 1942 was the last year of the 9N

The 801s are all round great tractors. Lots of power in a small, nimble platform.
If it is an 861 it will have a 5 speed tranny and a two hole clevis where the clutch rod hooks to the clutch shaft.
Also will be stamped 861 on the top of the tranny - just above and behind the starter.
Nice wife's tractor. Easy to get on and off. Not too big. Only thing to make it easier for her to drive would be power steering which was optional. But manual isn't bad either.

Live power may be hydraulics not pto check it out to make sure it has 861 stamped on the trans housing. it has to be a 861,871 or 881 to have live pto, the later 2 are SOS transmissions and are prone to failing

(quoted from post at 19:18:03 03/01/15) 871 and 881 actually have independent PTO. Only the 861 had live PTO.

Since when is independent PTO not live PTO????

To the OP, if you're wanting it for your wife, you better get her an 871 or 881 model. Otherwise you'll be in the doghouse when that danged clutch pedal on that 861 hits her in the shin!!!

Since forever. Live PTO is engaged by a lever (typically) and it receives its power through the 2 stage clutch. Depressing the clutch all the way to the floorboard will prevent power from going to the PTO. You can depress the clutch pedal only about half way down and shift gears while still maintaining power going to the PTO.

Independent PTO has its own separate lever to engage or disengage it regardless of whether the clutch is depressed or not.

If I remember correctly the pro lever is on the (as setting )left side and about 6+- long what defection engaged/disengaged up or down ?

Must be a Pennsylvania thing! Out in my neck of the woods Independent PTOs are another form of Live PTOs.

Since when is independent PTO not live PTO????

Live PTO implies dependency on a dual clutch pedal being halfway out or more. Independent PTO is completely independent of the clutch position (or even the existence of a clutch pedal in the case of the S-O-S models). As long as the engine is running the PTO will operate independently of any other setting on the tractor.

Out of curiosity I searched CL in your local area (I just like old fords, what can I say)

if it is the only one I saw, it looks to be an 860 if the guy is correct and it really has live PTO. You can tell it has a 5 speed transmission which is very nice, so technically it [i:1ddf181311]could[/i:1ddf181311] be an 850 without live PTO but the guy has already confirmed you say. Nothing wrong with an 860, mechanically almost identical to the 801 series (861). Would make an excellent garden and mowing tractor. Very light steering for manual, but it is still manual so your wife may not like it? I think it is about the best balanced manual steering tractor there is, engineered right on the money. Better steering than the N tractors.

Guy is a little high on the price IMHO, looks like a dealer.

Of course, if I am looking at the wrong tractor everything I wrote is irrelevant. you can post the ad, I don't think anyone on here is going to buy it out from under you.

Good luck, and one more thing, these are modern engines with overhead valves, super easy to work on, and extremely reliable with way more power than you probably need!

Thanks for the info the one I am looking at is from a dealer of
sorts price didn't seem too out of line conceding what I have
seen on CL prices from 2500 to 6500 for 801/861. To be
honest wife wanted a Oliver 550 but can't find them and a lot
more money and she is all about saving money lol

Sean, you said it much better than I did, thank you. Live Power is NOT Independent Power, regarless of one's geographical location.
