pto slip clutch

just working around the shop getting things ready
for spring and remembered I wanted to look at
installing the pto slip clutch for brush hogging
my pto right now has the 1 3/8" addapter and seems
to be rusted on so do I need a slip clutch or leave
the way it is
 
What is the exact tractor model and PTO type does it have?

And are you referring to a Over Running Clutch (ORC) or a slip clutch? They are different. A slip clutch protects against damaging the implement or the tractor PTO drive line if you hit an obstruction that would try to stop the PTO turning, basically does the same thing as a shear pin without having to replace it like you would with a shear pin. An ORC acts like a ratchet and keeps the implements momentum from being imparted back into the tractors PTO drive line when you are trying to stop (especially with non-live PTO).

If you have a trans driven (non-live) PTO then you should definitely be using an ORC to keep the mower from driving the tractor forward when you try to stop.
 
As Sean says we need more info for us to be able to help you help your self. What model tractor do you have and are you talking ORC which is like a ratchet and lets the brush hog blades spin with out pushing a tractor due to the PTO driven transmission
 
I'm sorry for lack of detail what I want to install is a orc on my ford 600 tractor i've been reading you should be using one when brush cutting /mowing to keep tractor from jumping forward now this 1 3/8" sleeve over my pto can I just add an orc or do I have to try to get it off
 
If you have a 660 no need fororc, others, yes.

I normally don't like orcs over sleeves, its not ideal, but will work if you cannot get the sleeve off.

You did remove the retainer right?
 
If it does in fact have a 1-1/8 PTO with a 1-3/8 sleeve you can do one of 2 things. Get eh sleeve off or use a ORC that fits the 1-3/8 PTO
