871 SOS problem

Yes this 871 I just restored. This is the third
sos tractor I have had and I have actually worked on both of the other ones. This problem I have never seen in the repair manuals and charts. Most f the time transmission works fine, but sometimes r1, 5th, 6th go into neutral. And maybe 9th. All other gears work fine all the time. Any ideas? OBTW this is my first time on this forum. I have been a full time farmer all my life, started driving tractors at age 5 (8n with loader) and repairing our own stuff ever since. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you did a paint job not a restore. Restore means to bring one back to what it was when new. I.E. fixing or repairing it to the point it meets all factory specs

Welcome to the forum!!!!!

Provided you still have the original "red" transmission, your ORC (Over-Running Clutch) is going out. If it's been replaced by a "blue" transmission, you have DDC (Direct Drive Clutch) problems.

Likely, at this stage you don't notice it in 1 or 2, but this failure will eventualloy take out half your ratios, to wit: R1, 1, 2, 5, 6 & 9.

Edit: The problem is described (for the red transmissions) on page 253 of the original Ford Shop Manual. It is Line 5.

What we have is a 1959 Gold Demo that has a recalled, repaired ,redone red sos trans with the 4 digit tracking code number stamped on right side. So probably is early transmission but recalled and redone. Meaning an overrunning clutch? Could it be a leaky servo o ring? As to restoration , everthing was repaired, redone or rebuilt including engine. The SOS was inspected, but not taken apart, adjusted and working just fine and felt there was no need to re do something that was working fine. thank you for info on clutch, I was hoping for something less painful.

Definitely an ORC [color=red:7b69e05fc5]red[/color:7b69e05fc5] transmission.

The ORC is completely mechanical, so no chance for hydraulic malfunction here. Your ORC, unfortunately, is getting tired.

Looking a page 253 line 5 I see it says what is functioning, not what is not. Can be confusing, because not focusing on what is working just what is not. thank You I will look into the over running clutch.
