Main input shaft removal question

The patient: 1970 ford 4000, gas, indept pto and
standard 8 speed trans. After splitting the unit.
Can I remove the main drive input shaft with the retaining plate as an assembly without removing the counter gear? In the manual they say to remove the pto counter shaft front bearing, then remove the shaft from the back of the trans. The counter shaft gear can then be removed.
Is it possible to remove the countershaft bearing
and slide the gear forward? Is there clearance to then pull the main input shaft assy with the retaining plate ,forward up and out of the trans
housing. I would like to inspect the pilot bearing
and renew my leaking shaft seals while I replace the clutch

Since nobody replied I'll try to help. I recently split my 3000 with 8 speed and independent pto. There was no was no way to do what you're asking, I think because of a retaining clip inside the tranny on the shaft. The clip was only accessible by splitting the tranny itself. I remember pulling the cover off of the input shaft and changing the smaller cover bearing plus cover gasket. I'm pretty sure if you just change the cover bearing and shaft seal you'll be ok. On mine everything else in the tranny was in good shape so I closed it up. Been running great ever since.
