ford 3910 air intake cover has poor fit. Ideas?

So I just purchased a 3910 and noticed the air intake cover had bumped something and looks a little rough. So bought a new one and it just falls over the pipe with zero restriction. Figured it was a bad part so ordered the factory version (3 times the cost) and it fits the same way. So my question is the original fits fine but is badly damaged. Its a 2.25" opening and so are the two replacements. Any idea why the replacements don't fit correctly. They are even from different suppliers.

I assume you are talking about the mushroom style top hat for the intake?
Ford did use two different sizes of intake pipes. 2" and 2 1/8" (I think) but I can't say for certain which your 3910 would have.

I did look this up on Messicks and they show a 3" version and 2 1/4". I purchased 2 different 2 1/4" covers from different suppliers and both measure 2.28" which makes sense so they would slid over the 2.25" tube. Next I will measure the tube on the airbox but feel it must be undersized. I have several of these series tractors and this is the only one like this. Funny thing is that the original fits tight like it should. Really don't see any damage to the tube or modifications which has me baffled.

More China Maid crap maybe.
I know it isn't appealing but you could shim the intake tube larger. Thin gasket material, tin foil, etc. As infrequently as you have to remove the mushroom it wouldn't be a big deal.

I agree I just hate rigging stuff. Believe it or not one of the covers I purchased was from NH for $100 which is crazy. Going to take it back today for a refund. Thanks for the ideas but looks like I may just have to rig it.

My first name is Jerry so 'rigging stuff is about all I do. :)
Don't be like the guy in Robert Pirsig's "Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" who was loathe to shim the handle bars on his new Beemer with a piece of beer can. So they missed a couple of day's travel while he waited for an appointment at the dealer.
Thinking about it here, a beer can would probably work fine in your case too.

Do the new caps fit your other tractors properly? If so then tha one tractor must have a non-standard intake pipe for some reason. If not, then the new caps must be all wrong.

Well found one on eBay for $14 with free shipping. Thank you so much and this is why I love this forum. Great idea!

I suspect that plain old rust is your enemy here and the filter housing pipe is simply eroded a bit. If it was me I'd probably take a center punch and drift it to the cap at four points around it's circumference, then fit it on. It'll probably be tight enough at that point.

. then What model Ford is a Fiat? When I went to the North Carolina state fair several years ago the people moving wagon I was on was pulled by a new Ford that was a Fiat.

Buy one of these and plug the hole in the nose piece. 82915849 plug. What you are trying to replace is not much more than a rain cap. Plug the hole and there is no rain cap to get bumped and tore up by a limb or some other obstruction you might hit. My solution on all of my tractors.

I think they had a 3010 that was a re-badged ba$tard, then there was the '35' series that was all re-badged Fiat's. You can always tell a fiat by it's upside down oil filters and sharp angular hoods..
The 3910 is purely a Ford Basildon tractor with it's roots tracing back directly to the 3000/4000 models. It has basically the same power as a 3000 with the running gear/rear axle of a 4000.

(quoted from post at 08:04:45 02/20/15) You could get one of those tailpipe expander tools, and expand the pipe till the cap fits tight/snug.

Well got the tail pipe expander in today. Headed to the farm to give it a try. Man was that a easy and cheap fix. Made it a perfect fit too. Thanks so much for your help as that is really a great tool and very inexpensive. Man I love this forum. :)
