4000 Ford Lift Issues

When cold, lift seems to work fine. Once slightly warm or fully warm the lift will not maintain it's level and will either go all the way up or all the way down. I changed the fluid with no success.

I have read about taking the hydraulic cover off and maybe replacing the orings???

Should that be my first course of action, or should I start differently?

Tractor is a 4000 that is a 65 model.

Thanks in advance for any help.

(quoted from post at 15:09:49 02/19/15) Simple things first. Is it in draft or position mode? That little lever under your right thigh - is it straight up or straight forward?

I tried it both ways.

I know you said 65 model, but that can technically still be 4 cyl.
Probably better to I'd as 3 or 4 cyl, just to be sure

Aside from it wanting to go all the way up or down, does it lift a heavy implement well? Put something heavy on it and check. If the lift is strong then it's less likely you have a worn pump or leaking piston seals and more likely you have worn out your cam follower pin.
You will need to pull the top cover off and inspect/replace the pin. While you are in there you may as well renew the piston seals. They're 50 years old.
The whole top cover kit is only like $20 with shipping and comes with the gasket and orings you will need.
They sell the kit on this site.
If you don't have one, you might consider buying the I&T FO-31 manual which is also available from here.
The manual is about $30 and will explain how to remove the top cover and replace the pin and readjust the lift linkage which is likely worn and out of spec.

It will lift a heavy implement fine. It just will not hold any level in the middle.

Also, as soon as i turn the tractor off, the implement will leak all the way to the ground.

Did you remove the draft spring control stud under the seat somehow and not put it back???

One of the two seat bolts must be a control stud to keep the draft sensing spring anchored correctly. Otherwise strange things will happen especially with heavy stuff.

It doesn't have to be heavy. It will not hold the height on a bush hog. If you try and set the height, it will slowly go all the way into the ground. If you are harrowing or tilling, it works fine cause you are either all the way up or all the way down.

Bush hogging is impossible like it is and that is the main use for this tractor. If it didnt have so much sentimental value, i would sell and get something newer with hydraulic remotes as well, but this is the tractor i learned to drive on and me and my pop rebuilt shortly before dimentia took his mind. He recently passed, and a full restoration will eventually happen to this old gal. She runs like a top, just has this lift issue.
