5000 head gasket?

I know this is not much info to go on, but a CL 5000 diesel SOS, reportedly has a bad head gasket. Emailed the owner (who doesn't know the year but said it was a later model) to ask him about possible cavitation holes in cylinders. He says he doesn't know. He is sending pictures. How can one tell between the two problems? He says you can tell by opening it up. Of course, that's a little risky for me. He is also selling a earlier gas one with 8 speed tranny problems - broken shift fork and damaged gears. Again, no year and no pictures yet. He says he/they bought them for repair but now doesn't have the time. Any thoughts?

Well, if the gasser with bad trans runs good, and the diesel with bad engine runs enough to test the SOS and everything aft of the crankshaft, and at least one of them has good steering, I at least see a whole tractor, plus some saleable metal, mind you there will be some heavy lifting involved. Check the manifold on the gasser carefully. I believe fordfarmer has had exp repowering using gas, he might chime in

Bad head gaskets... they usually push the puke out the top past the rad cap. If you take the cap off there will generally be fairly violent bubbling and black froth... and the coolant will look like it has oil in it.
If the block is cavitated, most times the coolant will be present in the oil...
Sounds to me like about 1500 worth of parts in the two heaps. You may luck out and it is just a bad head gasket... in which case you can fix it and use it with the SOS. Fixing the 8 speed will neither be cheap or easy if you want to fix it correctly...

I agree with your assessment. I would see about fixing the diesel first, but if it is pinholed, an engine swap would be a good way to go about it. With two complete tractors, it would be pretty easy. As far as the messed up 8-speed, I'd price a complete replacement from a boneyard before I tore into fixing it.
