Engine swap

I have a 1972 Ford 3400 w/ front end loader (Mod#C4012b, production code 2C15B, Ser# C332741). I need to replace the engine. I have a 1978 Ford 3600 ( CA213C, 8D05B, C571099) engine. Can I install it in the 3400 tractor? Horse power is not an issue.

It looks like you have a diesel now. I don't know where to look up the codes on a later 3600 but if it is also a diesel it will be a direct swap.
They are both 175 ci engines so HP will be the same.

C4012b, 2C15B, C332741 is a 1972 3400 with a diesel engine, 6 speed transmission and a trans driven PTO.

CA213C, 8D05B, C571099 is a 1978 3600 with a diesel engine, 8 speed transmission and live PTO.

They both have the 175 ci diesel engine so the engines should swap without any issues.

They are pretty much the same tractor except the 3400 has the heavier duty fixed front axle and the 3600 has the improved hydraulics of the x600 series.

The 3600 also has the advantages of the 8 speed transmission and the live PTO.

Is everything else besides the engine on the 3600 working?

If it were me and I could pick and choose, I would move the front bolster and front axle and the rest of the steering from the 3400 and put them on the 3600 along with the loader. If the 3400 has the cast iron oil pan and the 3600 doesn't, which is very likely, then I would swap that over as well.If other parts of the 3600 besides the engine have issues, then I would evaluate what it would take to get them working properly again. This would basically create a 335, which is the Utility tractor that replaced the 3400 and was produced in the same time frame as the 3600.

If the trans or rear axle of the 3600 is too far gone then I would swap the 3600 engine into the 3400, and don't forget to swap the oil pan as the cast oil pan on the 3400 adds structural strength for loader work.

buras, where are you located? I might be interested in the remains of whichever tractor you decide to pull the motor out of.

The tractor is in Buras, La. 60 miles south of New Orleans. Can email you photo of 3600. I live on west bank in Algiers which is part of New Orleans. There are several tractors in the parish which went under water during hurricane Katrina. My email address is [email protected].
Thanks

Louisiana would be quite a haul from Ohio. If it were me I'd swap the 3400 front axle, oil pan and loader to the 3600.
