I also brought home a tractor yesterday - from west, central IA.

FordFarmer and I have talked about owning the worst possible tractor in the series before and I think this one fits the bill.
Model# is 42024E Serial# C138536
I can't read the build date yet and it's only about 4 above zero today so I'm going to let that wait.

They had the rear wheels set way out so I had to pull the fenders and hire a tire service to come out and turn them around so I could winch it on my trailer.
$$ Ouch!

I bought this thinking I would strip it and put everything on that latest school tractor but it's supposed to run and drive fine. Wouldn't start tho so I'm hoping it's just points.
It was in a barn fire and has a lot of nasty smoke
all over it.
He drove it after the fire and said it still ran good. We'll see.
If the transmission works good maybe I'll keep it as is.
Does this lever mean it has the Deluxe SOS?

The tin and fenders are exceptionally nice on it and the pieces around the cowel, dash and platform all seem to be there.
It has a home made weight bracket and some Massey? weights on the front which I will sell off and put a couple of pillow weights on.

It a too big, ungainly, pernicious looking damned thing that I have NO use for. But I've wanted a NF Ford for a long time so I bought it.

There is a diesel 8 speed in south central Ia I almost called on but the 6000 broke my piggy bank----If I ever get a new style---- I like the looks of the flat deck

Worst possible tractor is how my dad discribed the very first ford 6000 he bought. It was SOOOOOOOOOOOO bad, ford took it back and gave him the newer 6000 model, blue instead of red. I don't recall it spending that much time in the repair shop.

Looks like a great project to me!
I don't have my cheat sheet for the #'s, is that a 4200?
Curious, what would you say that weighs?
Long haul on the freeway for a pickup.

I would love to own a 4200 tractor (or even a 5200) exactly like that one - even the Narrow front would be okay with me.

(Except: I would want the 8 speed gear drive. No SOS for me)

One does not see too many post 64 4000 row crop tractors, narrow front/gasoline or otherwise.

I've been watching one here locally for 20 years or so. It's an 8 speed diesel with WF and spinouts. The owner is still using it regularly. Not particularly interested in it but it is rather uncommon.

Yes, a 4200 - RC. It's a SOS, NF, Gasser.
I have a dealer ad for it that says 4770 lbs for an AP and 5040 lbs for the RC. Trailer is rated 10K. Tires don't have fluid which is surprising.
Yeah it's a good load but the Chevy handled it pretty well. Kept right at 70 most of the way home - 366 miles

Don't look that bad! Good go over with the pressure washer would have it lookin' much better. (On a warmer day, he he). Tin's all straight, just some light fade/surface rust looks like. My tractor, I'd turn them front tires back dish in. IMO.

How close to me were ya Jerry?
Hey we converted a RC to a utility a while back so I will have what ya need to make that platform work with your 8 spd.

Nice. Would like one of those. Ya selling? The lever you asked about is for the pto speed. Looks like that has the 540 and 1000.

Hey Adam,
I did think of you yesterday.
We went down I35 then I80 W to exit 60
Little town called Red Oak, IA
I might be interested in some stuff.

The 6000 was the hardest tractor Ford built to work on. My boss would make very good deals to farmers that he sold one to on 5000s so he could get them out of the country.

steering motors are "nonobtainium", so if yours needs work, you will need to be very creative. keep the clamp tight where the two shafts connect in the column.(might be the 5200 that I'm thinking of)

Should be a great 4000 when your finished.

I got the 6000 at Redfeild did we cross paths somewhere???

Where are you in IA?
I just looked up Redfield and you are right we were pretty close.
I did see a Used JD going east on I80 and a truck load of new JD crop sprayers heading west.
I sure would have taken notice of your 6000 if it had been anywhere close. And I'll bet you would have seen mine if we had crossed paths.

I am 6 miles south of hwy 30 and 65 --- east of ames

Model# 42024E should be a 4200 with gasoline engine, S-O-S trans and 540 rpm only independent PTO, not the deluxe PTO, but that does look like the lever for the deluxe.

Hello Jerry , No I believe it to be wrong , I think the starting number for 1967 is too high(I do have some Ford printed info with six month splits on the 3 cylinder tractor serial numbers somewhere just not close by) and I believe Ford did not build the 4200 and 5200 Row Crop Tractors until 1967 according to the parts books and sales literature that I have on them . Even though I have no need for one my Favorite is the 1969 or 1970 5200 diesel sos with a wide front . About 4-5 years ago I rebuilt a SOS in a 1969 Diesel that was a 3600 hr original paint barn kept 5200 out of New York probably the cleanest original I have ever worked on . That's why I was guessing 1967 until you found the build date . Thanks Tony

I'm curious about the build date, too. I always thought 42/5200 production started in '67, but the discussion about that a few months ago pointed towards a '66 start. The 4200 I stopped to look at north of Marshfield last fall was s/n C149703, and had a build date of 6J30?, Sept. 30, 1966. That one was a gasser/8-speed with a wide front. Something like $4k, if I remember right.

Hi Ultradog, what an excellent barn find, hats off to the previous owners for taking care of it,looks very good, not hacked up,congrats...john

I'm doing some work on it today so I took a wire wheel to the numbers.
The top number is 6-E-11-B
I'm less versed in these numbers than some here but according to Oaktree Ford Tractor Page it looks like 1966-May-11-day shift.
Is this correct?
If so it does put it in line with a 1966 according to the serial numbers here at YT.

Hello Jerry , I looked in my Ford books both parts and sales 4200 Row Crops did come out in 1966 and 5200 Row Crops came out in 1967 , I thought they both came out in 1967 . Thanks Tony
