If I am reading the owners manual right, it takes 17 quarts for the transmission and 17 quarts for the rear axle. Total 34 quarts, 8 1/2 gallons. That's a lot of fluid.....am I reading the manual right?

No, the trans is a little less but the rear axle is almost twice what you say.

My Owner's Manual says the transmission varies depending on type:

8 speed - 13.8 quarts
Select-O-Speed - 13.3 quarts.

And the rear end by itself takes 33.9 quarts

So the total between the two is between 47 and 48 quarts, or right around 12 gallons.

I have changed the fluids on my S-O-S trans and rear axle a few times each now, and my book is correct to within a quart or so.
