681 SOS shifting

Like I said in a previous post, I got this tractor running yesterday. A bad starter was the main problem. I have never had an SOS transmission but have read up on them. My shifter lever is on the left. I got it into R1 and got it off the trailer. The forward gears all seem to work and it is fun to shift on the go. BUT ... it is very hard to move the lever. Does anyone have any advice on how to loosen this up a little? I don't know how long it had been setting but best guess is 3 or 4 years.

Thanks in advance ... Norm43

Get a proper Ford manual that covers your S-O-S transmission before working on the top cover or shifter cable. You can cause expensive damage if you use improper procedures.

That said, perhaps the problem is corrosion in the selector itself.

Remove the dome shaped aluminum covers on each side of the selector by removing the phillips head retaining screws. Lubricate the moving parts inside. You can move your shifter handle to the opposite side while the covers are off if you like. If you damage the covers while removing, reproductions are available from the aftermarket.

DO NOT attempt to remove the transmission top cover or work on the selector cable or PTO cable without first reading and understanding the procedures in the Ford manual.

Good advice. Don't plan on going into transmission. Hopefully it's the cable and I can lube it up. I assume it should shift with very little effort. Is there a detent for going into reverse?

You should feel a detent in each ratio, including neutral and park. There are also shifting stops that can be set by the addition of screws in the proper places.

Hello Norm , As Dean was saying MAKE SURE you have a Ford manual . I completely disassemble the shifters and cables/casing clean everything and lube everything with White Lube or a Synthetic grease (especially cold climates) so the grease does not get stiff . Coat the cables before you insert them into the casings and coat everything in the shifter where the cable moves , the shaft and bushings and where the handle slides on the covers . After that it should shift like a dream . Thanks Tony
