Ford 4400 Select-O-Speed

Found a 1969 ford 4400 - Gas - Loader - Independent PTO - 3 Point with around 2000 hours on it im looking at buying. The problem is it has the select-o-speed transmission. My question is are those transmissions problematic compared to the manuals? And what kinds of issues should i look for in the transmission when im looking it over. What would be typical price for this tractor.

I plan to use the tractor mainly for loader work, some brush hogging and blading. Maybe move a few round bales here and there.

Thanks,
Aaron

The transmission is just about bullet proof with even irregular maintenance.

Check to see that all gears work as intended and that the PTO will carry a load when engaged and can be stopped when disengaged. Perform all tests when the oil is fully up to operating temperature if possible.

The SOS. In itself is not problematic. Some like them, some
don't. The issue is if the transmission is working correctly now
and if has been maintained, parts are no longer available.
Very difficult to initiate repairs. However if the SOS, is working
properly in all gear selection, fluids and filter maintained as per
manual they are tuff and dependable. Price? No idea,
depends on the unit.

The first generation was problematic like in many new things but the second generation has been very reliable.
