Dexta - Opinions Needs

I posted this on the Fordson forum without any action. I though these were an English made 2000, so here goes...

So I'm in the market for a little bigger tractor than my usual N series Fords.

I found this guy about an hour from me and would like some general opinions on the deal.

Tires seem fair, but the one and only pic leave more questions than answers. The blow by and roll starting are worrisome.

I went ahead and priced liners, rings, and pistons but I don't want a money pit. I want to get more pics, before I even think about going after it. If I can be in it for around $1500, i think id be ok.

If you can do the work yourself you might be able to live with it. I'm in the same boat with a 3000 right now, but it turns out the gas parts are made of unobtainium and cost double that of diesel kits.

I can do the work no problem. I've heard that parts availability is much better than a few years ago. Even YT has all the engine parts. I've heard the steering gear parts are are made of hens teeth.

Should I really worry about the blow by and oil? Or should I just chock it up to a wore out diesel that may/will need liners and rings?

You buying a money pit. You will likely spend 3800 on it to get it running well. Take that 3800 and buy a great tractor that you can get parts for.

Or take a chance, rebuild the starter and use it as is. But fixing it up will be very very very very costly.

I wish I could spend that 3800 on a nice 3000, 8x1 but they are over priced in my area. And I'm about to buy/remodel a house.

I really need something to handle around a 6' bush hog. I was hoping I could buy something on the cheap, through 4-500 at in in parts to make it semi dependable for mowing.

Not looking to restore, just mechanically sound enough to put about 75 hrs per year on.

Thanks for the links, but I already have two 8ns. I'm looking for something bigger since i now have to maintain 17 acres of pasture.

I know my smooth running 52 will handle the job, but that's a lot of mowing with a 5 ft cutter. I could save myself the trouble....stick to the 5 ft for the trails and small fields, then hire out the rest.

Keep looking, you might have to travel a bit, but they are out there.

I got my 4000 for $1900 with little to not work needing done at the time. But that was about 8 years ago....

Good luck

The dextra's are great on fuel and this site has a engine kit for less than $500 and some stuff interchanges with hundred series tractors.

If you don't mind travelling, here's one out my way (near Richmond, VA) with a bush hog. I suspect it won't last long, though.

I saw your post and would LOVE to have the 4000. Good peice, all there, love my fords. I'll be in east ky mid-February so I'll see if it still available. Thats a pretty good haul though.

I'll keep looking local. Still waiting to here back on this one.

Update!

Got a hold of the gentleman. It took him so long because he was USING the tractor doing a little grading.

He sent lots of pics and even a video of it in action. Looked good, sounded good. I'll try to pic it up if he'll work with me.

We had a dexta and it was a good tractor, we wore it smack out. at the time you could not get an oil pump for it so we ended up getting a 3600, that was in 1979 I think. I would try to find a 800 or 801 , they are plenty full around here and can be had for 2500 to 3000 dollars and field ready.

I had a super dexta rebuilt the engine , hydrolics
and put in a clutch 5 weeks later it broke a ring
and slobered just as bad as it did before the
overhaul , I wouldn't waste my money off on one .
This is my opinion and your money don't want to
offend anyone.

JC,
i bought a dexta worse shape than that, put about 3500 in it as a project/new rebuild, etc. , it still runs great but, still has worn steering box, and more new leaks after 250 hours of use. i use a 6ft on it, but have to go very slow, it just barely handles it. i'd wait and bump up a size bigger for a 17 acre tractor.
