High Freight Charges

Last Thursday Kenny asked me if I was going to Fleet Farm anytime soon. He needed some bolts for his pie weights.
I told him I was going up to my land in the morning and could stop by FF on my way.
"Oh great." He said. "I need 24 5/8X3" grade 5 bolts."
I told him, "Sure, I can get those. I'm going to charge you freight though."
Ken, "Freight?. How much is That going to be?"
I said, "How bout 10 cents per mile?"
He thinks about it for a second and then says, "Well Ok."
So I went on up Friday morning and came back that afternoon. I called him when I got back and said I had his bolts.
He was glad and came right over to get them.
We're having coffee and he asks; "How much were the bolts?"
I said "$22. Plus freight of course."
He kind of grumbles about it and then asks; "How much is the freight?"
So I told him "21.50"
"Twenty One Fifty!??
How could it be so High?
Fleet Farm is only 15 miles from here.
It should be about a buck and a half!"
So I said; "Well it didn't seem like $1.50 was very much money."
He said, "So. You set the price"
I said, "So I bought the bolts on the way up."
He says, "And?"
I said, "Well, it's 115 miles up there from here and I bought them on the way up so I charged you 10 cents a mile both ways."
He sputtered, "Well! You can't do that!!"
I said, "A guy's got to make a living somehow doesn't he? I didn't even charge you from here to FF on the way up so I saved you a buck and a half."
He said, "Oh no. I could have driven to Fleet Farm twice for that. You sure know how to gouge an old man don't you? How did I ever get into this mess?"

:) when my son wanted to split my can of pop I told him fine - I drank the whole thing and handed him the can.... "I wanted the bottom half."

It's always hard to put humor into writing, at least for me it is. Maybe this post didn't work so well - people thought I was serious.
I was trying to show how Ken and I try to get over on one another - trying to gouge each other, pilfer each others stuff, charging excessive fees, freight, if I leave a tool at his place he tries to charge me rent to "store" it. I try to charge him a toll to come in my driveway, high prices for my coffee, etc, etc.
The truth is we are more than generous with each other, help each other, care a lot about each other. See each other almost every day. So when I read that post to him yesterday we both got a good belly laugh out of it. Had some fun - as usual.
I guess that all didn't come out so well in the story.

If someone gives you a hard time about all most anything they are usually a good friend. The ones that don't give you a hard time are usually the ones you need to watch out for.

Knowing the "relationship" that you and Ken have I am well aware of what you are saying in your post. I'm extremely happy that the two of you can chide each other and it makes your friendship stronger. I had a friend like that until March 8, 2014 when he passed away. He was 22 years older than me but we had great fun with each other. Cherish every day that you get to spend with Ken.

Maybe it's just my strange sense of humor but I too got a good chuckle out of this one and did realize that you were joshing your friend.

Keep'm coming...

I always tell my students I only pick on the ones I like - then I point out that's why I never pick on "Steve".... :)
